Hello again folks!
I have a silent running question and was hoping maybe someone could help me out. For now I'm just running SH3 Commander with stock sh3 and 1.4b patch. Here's the scenario: My IX boat is running in Sept. of 42 and I'm heading to a grid just off Freetown. By the way....that Freetown Port was empty as could be when I was in there! Anyhow, now I'm patrolling grid DT and after an hour or so I find this HUGE convoy heading north. OK looking good. My boat is on the surface at night, I have good position and the closest ship is discovered at a range of about 7600 meters and I'm movin in. I did not go to periscope depth right away because I wanted to get closer using a higher speed but I know there are destroyers out there and then I find a distant one approaching fast. OK. I go to periscope depth then Rig for Silent Running. My boat submerges about 40 meters below and for some reason I am being detected. I couldn't shake off the destroyer which was dropping tin cans all over me. I zig zagged my boat and moved to periscope depth and let loose a few torps then went deep again and positioned for another attack. How am I being detected if I am moving at slow speed and rigged for silent running? Is this game buggy at times in this regard? Cheers |

This has been discussed quite many times. You can get detected even if not moving at all. What I could say is:
- you were to shallow, - you weres too fast (1 knt would be better ![]() - he knew were you should be as he spotted you on the surface, - if he pings you while being close (and he probably was) he'll almost always find your position, as pinging has nothing common with you making any noise, - and once more - you were too shallow. Go much deeper and don't try to beat it. It has friends around and you don't do. Escape and try to intercept the convoy once again. ![]()

With stock game :
- it's normal Freetown is empty - you are lucky to have the "silent cone" so going deep enough and silent running normally let you get away from warships. Try rather 150m than 40m... Silent running only means that your crew stops all noisy activities (torpedo reloads, repairs, etc) and engines run at minimum speed. It is not normally a cloaking device.

Also be aware that if you can see the enemy on the surface in 1942 there's a good chance they have detected you on radar.

Thanks again! Next time I see a convoy it's periscope depth right away!
Cheers |
