Default How did it know??

First patrol, came across a destroyer a good way away. Set an intercept course, stayed out of 2km (was night). By the time it came within 2km I was submerged and stationary, so it shouldn't have been able to see or hear me. Only popped the scope up a couple of times. Had everything nicely lined up and the damn thing changed course and came in my direction with floodlights scanning either side of itself. Started pinging me but I haven't read about how to get away (didn't expect to go after a destroyer first patrol) so first career was over pretty quickly

Earlier on I spent maybe an hour or more setting up a target only to ID it as a neutral ship a few minutes before I would have sent it to the bottom

What year? Mods? If you're using GWX, than if your stationary at pd, then you will rise 2-3, which puts your conning tower above water. DD could have seen that, or picked it up on radar.

When did u start your career? If its 42 onward, the escorts have radars and see you right away. Early in the war they would only see your scope if you let them get really close, like within 2000m (and of course assuming that you are really quiet).

Best not to chase the destroyers 'cos they're out looking for you

Go for the merchants they're unarmed (for a while anyway)

There's loads of good reading in the stickies at the top of this forum - how to attack, stalk ect.

And welcome to the best (in my humble opinion) forum around

It was '39. I guess they must have seen my scope, pretty unlucky

The reload (might as well, it was the first patrol of the career) had 3 destroyers in the vicinity coordinate together. Couldn't get away, waters were shallow and they kept pinging me to stay within range. I wore most of my battery out Can't believe I actually spent an hour or more running away from destroyers I couldn't see

Welcome to Subsim!

Perhaps she heard you. Were you in silent running mode? If not, even though you are stationary and your motors aren't moving your crew will be running around slamming hatches, shouting at one another and banging on the bulkhead with hammers.

Ensure you have rigged for silent running (press "Z" to do this) and you will be much harder to detect.

Good Luck!

Were you in silent running mode?

No, just realised I only started using silent mode on the reload (vs the destroyers). I guess you drop into silent mode until you're ready to fire? Need to read up on ranges for the different types of detection.

Really enjoying the game, great to play something that requires patience and a brain

Yep, it's a fantastic game and I love the visuals of the sea with sunrises and sunsets.

As you weren't in silent running mode I'd say the enemy most likely heard you.

I go to silent running mode whenever I detect an enemy sound contact. You will never be completely silent but it does make you ALOT quieter. Keep in mind that to move quitely you should restrict your speed to no more than 2 kts.

While the boat is rigged for silent running you will be unable to reload torpedoes or repair damage. It's your call to judge how badly you need that torp or to fix the damage and if you're willing to risk detection to do so.

Keep in mind that the DD'S have a look out and if your scope is sticking a bit to much out of the water or to long well its a give-away. But you'd better hunt other prey!

Like big fat cargos!

And don't forget this!!! Subsims take A LOT of Practice!!! But it's well worth the effort. I've been playing subsims since Gato came out for the Commodore 64 (sweet machine!) and I still get my butt kicked sometimes.

But that's the fun--in the challenge and unpredicatability.

hang with it. You'll be glad you did.

And buy SH4 through this site to support your local Texan :rotfl: .

Cheers!

I made it a rule for me to use silent running anytime I'm near enemy contacts. That way I can't forget to turn it on. Of course it's a good idea to keep the torpedoes loaded at all times.
As soon as you fired all your tubes don't reload immediately but try to stay undetected and escape to a safe distance.
As you found out the hard way shallow water severely limits your ability to evade the escorts. Even a small armed trawler or even an armed tug can be really dangerous in shallow water. Lately I was attacking a convoy in Mid 1940 in 70 meters of water near the coast, and had three armed trawlers on my tail. Was pretty hard to get rid of the bunch.

In case you're not using GWX yet: get it!
