Default GWX question (fantasy campaign)

Can anyone tell me if I was to change the uboat description in the campaign file to the type XXI u-boat, would that be all that I would need to do to have a campaign where the type XXI is available for 1939 onward?

A "what if Germany had waited" scenerio.
TIA

I may be wrong, but I think you can go into main config file and change the date that the sub is available. You would also have to change the required renown.

Would you know what I would need to change it to, or where I can find that information? Thanks.

Again, I am not sure. Try: data\config\main config Open it and use the find for XXI When it comes up, there will be a year ?1944 or ?1945 change it to 1939 Then find renown when it comes up for XXI it will be 20000. Change that to 0 save. BE SURE YOU BACK UP THE MAIN CONFIG FILE FIRST. If this doesn't work, I don't what to do.

I think you have to change the availability dates of all the sonar and radar equipment the Type XXI gets or you'll just get the base sub.

No, don't do that. Leave it as the base sub.

Here is why:

The British developed a sub in 1917-1918 called the R-Class. It had high underwater speed (14 or 15 knots, I think) and six bow tubes. It was developed as a 'sub killer', but no one, not even the Brits, saw the potential in a submarine with high underwater speed. They were paid off in the early 1920's.

So, the basic Type XXI (or a different boat of similar performance) was technologically feasible in the late 1930's - early 1940's, it just required the imagination to do so. Instead, the Germans basically re-worked their WWI UBIII series into the Type VII.

The radar and advanced sonar stuff, on the other hand, needed the basic research that was just being done at that time, so it wouldn't have been available even if they had the imagination to do it.

Thanks gentlemen. I think I'll give it a try.
I can see what torplex is saying about the technologies being brought along with the XXI. If my intention is to play it as if the war didn't begin until 45 then maybe Germany would've had some of the technology. Then again, how much of their technological advancements were borne of reaction to the allies detection advancements? Like the snorkle for example. Perhaps radar might not be counted among them as it seems it was being developed by everyone at the outbreak.
Bill's idea could be the answer with just radar added to the mix.

Ran into a problem in placing the boat in a flotilla within a campaign. I tried to open one of the files in the campaign folder but they are not your typical type file.

There's about 200 threads on this topic - search for "XXI in 1939" and you'll prolly find half of them.

In any of them, you'll find all the detailed instructions that you need to get your XXI in 1939.

Enjoy!
