Hey guys,
I just got Silent Hunter III this Christmas, but have only been able to start playing this morning. I started with a type VIIB in 1939, using the GWX(?) pack. For my first sortie of the game, I found a convoy south of Portsmouth and began my attack. I came out of it having sunk a total of 90 000 tonnes, including the battleship HMS Nelson, and 3 Pyro Ammunition Carriers (great explosions). The hardest part was deciding which crew members recieved the assorted 43 medals! I have played Silent Hunter II, but I've never got anything like that. Is a result like this unusual, or has anyone else ever recieved sunk such a surprising amount? ![]() P.S: Whenever you recieve a mesage containing latitude and longitude coordinates, how does one find this location? I know SH II has a lat, long mous position, but SH II dosent. Could I possibly get some help on that? |

Hi mate, and welcome to subsim!
![]() The lat/long is just eye-candy, IIRC. It is just a part of the radio messages that you shouldnt pay attention to! ![]()

Thanks very much, Seth. It is plain to the eye that you know a lot about SHIII. I was wondering if you could answer just three more questions. 1. My computer handles the game pretty okay, despite the 64mb graphics card. However, the 1000x time compression things is really jittery and laggy. It happens sometimes and others not. Do you know how to fix that, or lessen it?
2. Is it possible to take screenshots of things without fraps? Does Print Screen go into a folder or something? And 3. I would imagine you've been playing for a while. Whats your best sortie, and kill? I bet a few aircraft carriers have copped it. And whats your best tip. Thanks again. |

It is possible to take screenshots without fraps, but I`m not sure how, since I use fraps. Someone will come along shortly anyway. ![]()

I agree with Stabiz on the hardware issue, mate! He knows what he's talking about! (Check out his Excellent movies, btw!!)
![]() The screenshots: I use Fraps or simply Ctrl + F11. The images are stored in my SHIII folder (dont know why with Ctrl + F11, but for Fraps i have directed them there.) I dont remember what my best sortie was, because i have played SHIII so long that i cant even remember my first patrol. But i dont think it have been over 60000 tons. Edit: best tip: Take your time, dont rush anything. Learn the DD's movements around the convoy, watch out for sudden course changes. Try to forsee where the convoy is heading, run silent & deep, and try to get to periscope depth after the first escort have passed you. If you get inside the convoy, you can do alot of picking before the escorts get a hold of you. But beware for those armed merchants.. Hope this helps a bit, mate! ![]()

That's a great patrol!! I'm sure you got a couple of medals for that one! After a few more you will find out how lucky you were, and you will be wish for more patrols like your first.

well done m8 on your patrol that was stunning. but i agree with the guys here even on vanilla 90k tonnage is hard to come by. on gwx from what ive heard that kind of patrol will not happen everyday and you will realise that after some more patrols
