Hello there!
Being a long time reader of this forum I finally get registered to participate and also got a question right away. One week ago I downloaded GWX (including the dec 23 update) and installed it. Its one of the best mods I've ever seen and not only for SH3. But i did notice something strange yesterday. I am on my 6th mission (starting 1939) with a type VIIB. When running at 7-8 knots my navigator tells me that I have a maximum range of over 22000 km. That would be roughly 12000 nm. A range that not even the IXC had. Is this intentional or am I missing something? edit: Oh and by the time weserübung occurs, I saw at least 5 ships going through the mountains of norway... Not bad? I am on a type VIIB!
Every source I found about the Type VII boats tells me that their maximum range was 6500 nm (12000 km) at 10 kn. And my boat almost doubles that. ![]() And it only takes 2 kn difference for that? |

The only reason I can think of, is that you have a strong wind on your stern...but I doubt this can make that big difference, though.

@ filefool
Welcome to Subsim Mate ![]() To your range question.:hmm: This is too much for a Type 7. To just eliminate all possibilites, did you follow the instructions for installing GWX as described in the manual and do you have anyother mods or programs running?

Thanks for the welcome!
To answer your question: I got SH3 when it came out but didn't play it a long time. That changed with the release of GWX and I had to dig deep to find my SH3 copy. ![]() So I did a fresh install with patch 1.4b and installed GWX just as it was described in the manual. The only thing I have enabled with JSGME is the dec-23 patch and the type XXI hydrophone-fix. Actually the range is pretty accurate when i am going the 10 knots which are described everywhere as being the normal cruise speed. But going 2-3 knots slower almost doubles my range. I am not complaining on this, it just doesn't feel right (realistic) since I don't have to buy a type IX to participate in operation drumbeat. |

Somebody might have to correct me but.....IIRC to acheive the desired realistic value of 12000km @ 10kts you actually have to put those figures in the file changes. The problem arises as SH3's engine uses 8kts as the most efficient and therefore works on the figure of 12000km @ 10kts to work out what your max distance can be @ 8kts. Alas Klar ![]() I don't know how technically correct my explaination is however this is what I came across when editing my boats range before supermods came along. I will mention this to the GWX dev's to see if anything can be done.

I wonder... :hmm: the IXD2 has a max. range of 23700 km at 12 knots! Think about how far you be able to go by dropping the speed about 4 kn! You start in 1943 when it's available and you never have to come back until the war is over. ![]() |

What I know is that fuel consumption vaired immensly depending on whether you ran at low or high speed - it varied much more than compared to, say, a car. When there was operation Paukenschlag, Germany sent two VIIc U-Boats from France to America (U.S. coast!!!), and obviously it worked, but they had to travel very slowly, probably using one engine only. By the way: Lehmann Willenbrock was one of those guys (U-96)!!
Cheers, AS

Yeah about 7 knots is the most efficient speed in SH3, I guess that's why slow ahead is now only goes to 4 or 5 knots in GWX, unless you use the speedo to dial in the 7 knots manually, you don't have unrealistically long ranges. I wondered on my first patrols why on slow ahead the boat would only go 8-9000 km I think until I discovered that it wasn't running at 7 knots, like in stock SH3 anymore.
