Default Stealth

I play with the stealth meter on. I am just now discovering a problem, I think. It turns red from about 7km away from a any merchant vessel and they really can see or detect me. It was never that sensitive before. Has anyone had this issue before? It is really hard to take ranges and bearings without the aid of my watchman, especially from farther than 3 km. Any advice?

What speed are you going when they detect you? Remember, if you're flying around at flank speed, you're kicking up a big wake that basically paints a big bullseye on your boat.

I wasn't at flank. However, there was really calm water and full daylight. I just never have noticed being detected so easily before.

Iirc, the "stealthmeter" indicates how detectable you are, not if you have actually been detected...
You should try to play without in GWX, there are plenty of ways to know if you have been detected. Warships will obviously start coming your way and probably shoot at you, merchants will start zig-zags and if armed will also start shooting at you.
At night, expect searchlights and starshells to indicate clearly you've been detected...

I knew about "how detectable" it means. But I still believe there is something amiss. I had to reinstall SHIII and GWX the other day, new patrol and all, and now I notice a severe difference from prior to reinstall.

GWX has kicked up the eyes on enemy ships a lot. Check out this thread:

Also read page 10 in the GWX manual regarding shipboard optics.
