Default Why no British Subs? Come on Ubisoft!

A bit of a little rant boys...

Wonderful though the SH series of games are....

Am I the only one who gets a bit miffed that there has so far been no British submarine element to the SH III and SH IV. I know that I would say this being British but not only that but the variety would then be fuller and more varied (brit submarines carried more tubes, better torps etc). Mediterranean and Indian Ocean theatres, Atlantic etc.

Is it correct to say that enemy submarines seem to of been omitted (so far from the SH series)?

There were some real confontations between enemy subs in WWII. HMS Trenchant etc.

I'd rather have a large selection of subs to drive myself. British, Japanese, and whatnot subs can be added by expansion packs.

No man! I won't, and less with the negative vibes too!
Jap Subs are Jap subs alls well and good, thats fine but I think theres a lot of room for bringing the Brit scope to this. I mean even if they appeared in the earlier SHs updating and bringing it bang up to date.

i have to admit, im British and im not bothered about the lack of British subs. Im just thankful that we have sub sims of this quality available. I mean other sim catagories have all but dried up and ours is rich with development. Just keep them coming and I dont care whats in them.

Oooohhh... those used to be great... I can remember at least one from the 80's (from Microprose?) that was completely superior in implementation and gameplay to SHIII (compensating for differences in technologies available then and now, of course)... you could command a whole platoon of tanks, jump into any station you wanted (driver, gunner, commander,... well, almost any, the loader you couldn't do)... you could give commands to supporting troops, like infantry and other lesser armored vehicles... you could call in airstrickes from A-10s and Apache Helicopters... It came with a BOOK of a manual with very good explanations on everything from the composition of modern reactive armor to diagrams and specs on all current NATO and Soviet military equipment... tactics and strategy where discussed in the manual and even short lessons in history could be learned from reading the game manual...

OK, I'll stop now, I don't want to highjack this thread...

Steel Beasts Professional Edition ($125) available if you're feeling flush.
Steel Beasts 2 consumer version available at some point in the future.

This goes back to the argument/discussion is this (SHIV) going to be a Pacific Theater sim or not. SHI was the PTO and had Jap subs, though one was not in control of them - though if we are looking at the sim as the Allied side one would reason you would not be in control of a Jap sub but would not mind going against one - as US boats did do - if not on a regular basis.

Then there is SHII and III. I remember in SHII going against a British boat but again not having control of it as both these sims were the Axis side - and again would reason you would not be in control of a British sub.

I fully understand those who wish to control other countries subs. I am just of the opinion that if it is an Allied sim in the Pacific and US boats played the major role that those are the boats that should be in it - as there is already much discussion on which US boats should be included vs size of programing and what devs can / can not do adding the control over a British sub would just add to the concern.

I have read books on British subs in WWII and they performed well and I think it would be great to be commanding one in the Med or North Atlantic going against supple lines to Rommel in Africa or the Germany Navy holed up in the North Atlantic. Also the thought of a S or T class going against a VII class would be very interesting. Maybe this could be developed as a new add on to the SHIII sim!

As far has having more tubes or better torps - from what I read the British had issues with their torps at times also and the T class had 10 tubes, however the US boats (Tambor on up) also had 10 but theirs were within the preasure hull, while the British T's had 6 internal and 4 external ( 2 in the bow and 2 amidships) so those were not avaliable for reload once used. Though some also had 11 tubes, again some were external and not avaliable for reload. A great site on British subs in WWII is:

Some good pictures and information!

I agree that Allied subs would be nice, but with the way SHIII/IV is made, you will need: 3D interiors/exteriors for each boat-in SHI all they would have needed would be different static screens; British/Dutch (Japanese?) voices-you can't have a yankee inflection for the crews of those boats.

I think we would be looking at a dely of several years, not to mention the costs involved to hire the different voice actors.

In the second picture on this page....do I see also a type VIIB next to the british ones ? I know that the british captured a U-Boat and made it operational in the Royal Navy at some point. Is this it ?

Id love to drive a T class sub, but for now im happy with the US subs availiable, im more concered about Japanese AI subs making it in to the game, I really hated being the only sub in the entire ocean in SH3, that really sucked (it was the biggest let down for a great game). If SH2 can have AI submarines why cant SH3 and 4? Give me one good reason. As my sig suggests I want the chance to slam a torpeedo in to an I-boat and at least be able to assist/meet other US subs, even if there are no 'wolfpacks' strictly speaking.

I'd like to see British subs (only) playable in Silent Hunter V or some expansion pack, as it'd be a welcome break from German and American submarines, but right now, I'm happy having only one side, for many reasons.

I think an expansion pack for SHIII would be great as Bristish subs were perdominatly in the European theater though some did undertake a few patrols in the Pacific during the later stages of the PTO when VE day had come and gone.
