Default U-196, a photolog of my last IX career game

As my new sig amply demonstrates, im a bit burnt out on it all. That said, i figured that i should play a type IX career game, one.... last... time, before i retire to the med, or quit the game altogether. (yea yeah ive said that before).

I thought it would be fitting to close the book on this aspect of SH3 for me by loosely reinacting my favorite captain in the realm of german Uboat sub simming. That captain being Eitel-Friedrich Kentrat.

http://www.uboat.net/men/kentrat.htm
http://www.uboatwaffe.net/ops/boat.cgi?boat=196
http://www.uboataces.com/ref-insignia16.shtml#U-196

Kentrat is NOT known for tonnage. What he is known for is making the longest war patrol of any submarine in wartime; 225 days. One thing that peaked my intrest in this captain, besides the hollywoodesque and grizzeled appearance, and superlong patrol, was one little bit i read about him in passing. I can't find this article i read again, and try as i might i coudlnt find more information on it, so i can't substantiate it, but it was a bit that i think possibly gives a hint of his character.

The gist of the reference is that Kentrat Sailed with or was otherwise under the command of Luth in U-181 sometime circa the Monsun boot operations. Another Uboat was in trouble, (was being hunted down by a HK group i think, i dont remember exactly other then the uboat was in dire trouble ). Kentrat wanted to make for the area with all speed to lend assistance, Luth disallowed it. To me that said something about the man if what i read was true.

Edit: im going to toy with this for awhile, so expect small updates over time if this is at all intresting to you. Im not going to knock myself out and sit down for 10 hours trying to get a patrol done. ( yeah ive done that too )

Patrol 1.
Mission orders: Proceed to grid square ES32 and await further orders.

Early January, 1943, U196 leaves Bordeaux approximately 1800 hours under cover of darkness.

Being prudent, the Preining route will be used to avoid HK groups lurking in the suicide stretch.

U196 dives at first light, submerged by day, and running at ahead standard at night to shorten the time crossing the bay.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
22Jan43 Arrive ES32
New orders: Proceed to GG89, resupply from U459, NLT 10Feb43. Recon area S, and E of Cape Hope for shipping. Avoid contact until such time, exception 10K tonner's.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

27 Jan 43, U196 sinks it's first ship, a 7000 tonner. Two aft torpedo's, then finished off with gunfire.

05 Feb 43, U196 resupplies from U459

Continuing on, U 196 is somewhere south of the cape of good hope.....

A symphony of destruction, the devils drum rolls to the sound of torpedo's exploding.

Another sinking, Looking for surviors to interrogate.

-----------------------

The reconoitering of Durban Harbor

yes, its safe to surface now.

This patrol is going to be over soon, only 6 torpedo's left.

------------------------------------------
05 March43,
two torpedo's left. Position, NW of madigascar. Decision save them for emergency and return to Bordeoux.
---------------------------

U-196 arrives in port.

Already have a med career started with a type 7. I put it on hold. I did sink me a BB in that career though so far, MUCH to my surpise. Shear dumb luck, and 6 torpedo's.

I need to finish this indian ocean kick for some sense of closure. It's one of those things that i told myself i'd do (again), but kept putting off. As for X1 patrol, can you imagine trying to do a X 1 TC with this patrol im doing now? I't would take me at least half a year to complete. At X 1 TC, i woudlnt have posted what ive done so far for another month.

On a side note, i wonder where ppl get their info:

That took awhile, but didnt last as long as i thought it would. Ok.. break time. Getting back to base was a loooong trip. That little harbor raid used up most of my torpedo's. Had i not done that, id still be out there somewhere.

I had one major surpise this patrol. Tht was two british spitfires that got the jump out of me NE of durban. NO RADAR on them. My gut feeling was to put the boat to flank and a hard turn, manning the flak guns. Instead i tried to dive when my instinct was telling me it was too late. They straffed the snot out of my deck, from stern to bow, the whole length of the boat. Would have made an awesome screenshot but i was a little too preoccupied to think of it. That little mistake almost cost me the boat. One straffing run, no bombs hitting took out 9% of my hull.

Im im really pissed off right now. I was well into patrol 2 and all my saved games are corrupted. Everytime i load, it CTD's, and no i didnt change any of the files whilst on patrol, i know better then that.

I have a pet peeve, a big one. I have shear utter contempt, hatred even, that defies the english languages ability to acurately describe how much i hate doing stuff twice. I am NOT starting patrol 2 over again. This is done, finite, End of story. Time to move on.

Anyway, I was in the 12th, transfered to the 1t0h, and here's what patrol 2 was looking like:

I left port 28june43. I got this message 1Aug43

Along the way i managed to sink a few ships. A couple 11K tonners in fact. This was somewhere North of capetown:

I had saved my game id say, a few grid squares away from that sinking, after the weather had calmed down to like 7 kts. (Dont save a game and exit in 15 kt winds if you can avoid it) But, going back to the orginal radio message, this is what i had planned.

The tan lines represents the distance that i had already covered. My last sinkings were in the tip of the GH grid. I had saved and exited the game in GJ. The lime green lines represnt what i had planned, and i know for fact there's some major tanker tonnage up there. Not to mention alot of DD's, many of which last i knew of were elite in crew rating. It promised to be one helluva patrol. I know air cover is up there, and out of bombay and the tip of india there. Having done all that, i was going to bring it into penang.

Not now. Im not redoing that, Not on patrols with that much range. Where long range patrols are concerned Dead is dead in my book, and a corrupted save game is just as dead to me as a f**king depth charge.
