Default How do you choose your Flotilla, Year etc.

Hi guys..

I'm always stuck on which flotilla to choose, and whether to start early or later one etc. So basically I have tried starting a career in a boat for each flotilla, and start in '39. But then I'm not concentrating on one boat. Don't mind the Type IIa boats also, don't always want to choose the big boats, latest equipment etc.

So, how do you folks decide which to go for, toss a coin or pick numbers out of a bag? I tried asking my mum once, but it took me ages to explain what a flotilla was, so I'd lost the will to carry on and didn't want to play anyway .

All depends on what you want from the game
I like to start in 39 and work my way through the years
Transfering as I go to different Flotillas
Sometimes will start late war to start in Penang or Constanza
Other times will play just a Norway career

I suppose my favourite has to be the Biscay ports 1940 onwards in a IXB\IXD2
Hunt the east coast of US and the Caribbean

My first time playing was in a type II out of Willhemshaven in 1939.. I hated the small torpedo loadout and the slow speed.. I finally earned the helm of a VII and began reacking up the renown and experience.. I'm currently skippering U-805 (IXC boat out of Lorient) and have the range to get to the caribbean and back if my initial patrol is a bust.. Single tankers and cargos

Even with the slow dive time, the IXC is a formidible threat to the many convoys I've been encountering.. I've returned from most patrols with 50K-70K tons of shipping sunk..

I'm a history junkie, so I run several careers at the same time-one from each available flotilla. It's a bad habit I picked up ten years ago playing Silent Hunter 1.

I'm partial to the Type VII boats. Usually start with the 2nd Flotilla out of Lorient in Jan-Feb, 1940.

No particular reason on start time...other than I hate the Kiel Canal and Wilhelmshaven's location.

I usually start in 39 with the VII at Wilhelmshaven. Kiel has always been a bugger with the canal. There is a inbound/outbound auto-navigate now with GWX for the canal. I have not tried it yet. At any rate, I like the ports in France with easy access to the merchants. I like tranfering to those when they become available.

I pick a starting year, month, flotilla and then I go to ubootwaffe.net to find the boats that departed that month from that flotilla and pick one of those boats. I then go to uboataces.com to look for the emblem used by that boat, hopefully it is in the game, otherwise I use the flotillas emblem. I try to find as much info on my boats and crew as possible. And .... no, better stop ranting now. Leaving Kiel for my 7´th patrol in GWX.

Looks like I'm the only one who tosses a coin then

.. better keep it quiet

Thanks guys hehe.. always interesting to see how we choose. The Kiel canal is a pain, but beats going all the way round the other way I guess.

Good hunting

Playing SHIII vanilla with 1.4 patch.

Early on tried the IIA coastal submarine in 1st flotilla, but wasn't having much luck sinking ships. With dud torps option enabled 2 out of 3 prewar fish wouldn't explode when hitting enemy ships. On patrol might sink one ship and damage a second then then had to return to port.

Restarted a new career with the 7th Unterseebootsflottille in Kiel Sept 1939. Type VIIB uboat has plenty of range, a good supply of torps, and the 8.8cm deck gun. Paid extra for an officer with medic, gunner, and torpedo skills. Now having great luck operating on the surface at night. Sneak up on small ships, fire one torp with impact pistol engaged. After the ship is damaged move in to 1000m and finish them with the deck gun.

Been cautious when encountering aircraft and warships. Always dive to periscope depth when encountered. Have engaged a few small warships, but will evade anything larger than an armed trawler.

I play DID so when I get gakked (usually sometime around in late '42 or early '43) I always go back to the beginning of the war and switch off from the flotillas there.

i start the game in sept. of 39, out of the 7th and transfer later. i play DiD but, when my career is destroyed, ill pick back up with a new crew and uboat and out of the flotilla i was operating out of. so if i am KIA in june of 42, ill start a new career in june of 42(using SH3 commander). this way, i get to do the whole war, and see the whole game.

i think of myself as my own, replacement.

oh, btw, ive lurked here for ages, but just now picked up the game again after GWX was released.
