Default Operation Cerberus (GWX)

Oh... my... God...

This has to be one of the single most amazing things I have ever seen in SH3, and maybe even in any computer game. For those of you who don't know, Operation Cerber is a Single Mission in GWX. Basically, it pits the Scharnhorst, Gniesenau, and Prinz Eugen and their destroyer and Schnellboot escorts, versus a group of Brit destroyers. The player u-boat is in the middle (a bit closer to the Brit DDs), but I don't do any work, I just like watching the INTENSE action .

When I say intense, I mean intense. It really gives you a taste of GWX's new gun settings (I forget the name). The two groups are a couple kilometers apart when the fun begins, and all hell breaks loose. You see flashes on the horizen coming from the BBs, but no sound, almost like a surreal dream. All of a sudden there is a resounding BOOM BOOM CRASH BOOM, as the flurry of shells come raining down on the little British tin cans. The DDs fire back with all they have, and soon the sky is full of yellow shells zipping accross the sky, almost like little fire-flies. Plumes of water rise on all sides, and there is the occasional CRUNCH as a 16 inch shell gets acquainted with a Town destroyer.

I zoom out and all I can see are two sets of white lights flashing on the horizon, one from the Brits and the other from the Germans. I am too far away to hear anything; it almost looks as if they are just signalling each other in Morse code with giant flashlights. The occasional ball of orange light mixes in with the white lights of the firing guns.

And then I am awakened from this beauty by a CRASH TO DESKTOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!AAAARGHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHH THIS GAME IS SO BUGGY AND I WANT TO HIT SOMETHING REALLY REALLY REALLY HARD!

So then I reload the mission and I begin to watch the exchange when ANOTHER CTD HAPPENS!!!

So, I am going to blame it on a buggy game, and reload for a THIRD time. If it happens again, I am going to start to ask for suggestions and help. I am using GWX and SH3 Cmdr 2.7. I rollback Cmdr after every play.

I suggest this wonderful mission to EVERYONE who has GWX -- to anyone who doesn't, I strongly recommend getting it! Kudos to whoever made the mission.

Cheers,
Rose

Sorry to hear that.. But intense action and not enough memory might be the source of crashing...

Even my AMD Athlon64x2 3600+, 1Gb RAM and 7600GS had slow frame rate when displaying burning oil on water surface, that shows that SH3+GWX consumes more resources than other games.

When I played Face of War, I cannot finish some missions (I know that I can, but the computer cannot do that) because the lack of free memory

So, you better stop watching them (I know that it's hard. I'm eye candy as well) or you may experience it again and again

Hope that GWX team will release a mod in the future, allowing players to sacrifice quality to stability

There is nothing wrong with the mission, I watched them until it was over, and my god its a spectacle.

Of course, you are not likely to hit something like that in campaign, but that particular incident is a frame rate killer yes.

Hmmm, I don't think that's the problem. I have a Dell XPS Gen. 5 from about a year and a half ago. It has 2.5 gigs of RAM, and a GeForce 6800 with 256mb RAM. And the weird thing is, there is no loss in frame-rate -- it's smooth as butter. It is just a completely spontaneous CTD.

Well, it happened again. A THIRD spontaneous CTD during Operation Cerber. No lag in frame-rate, smooth as butter. No explanation. Any more help would be appreciated (thank you Peterloo and Stabiz for your responses).

Hey Rose, maybe Stabiz can put together a video of the action, so that the people with low end rigs & frequent CTD's can enjoy it? But only if you have the time, Stabiz!

Edit: You could do it in a quentin tarantino / woody allen sort of way... With your uboat suddenly falling in love with a battleship, and then it turns into a vampire... or something..
(Man, i need to get some sleep...)

That would be awesome (once again, only if you have the time, Stabiz)!

PS: It happened again. I will load up the mission one more time and when it says, "Silent Hunter III has experienced a problem," I will look at the error report and copy and paste it here. Maybe someone will know what's up.

Edit: Well, it wouldn't let me copy/paste the error report, so I am quite frusterated right now. I restarted my computer to no avail: I played it a fifth time and still, a CTD. I would be content if there was at least an explanation, but I have of top-of-the-line computer so I can't even see what the problem is. I'm still blaming it on a buggy game . Has anyone else had this problem happen when playing Cerber? Maybe I just need to defrag? Also, does a defrag have any adverse effects if I do it mid-patrol?

What 16'' shells? Scharn/Gnei had 11'' :P

Its a character limit on the names for missions in SH3 isnt it? the 'us' is 'Cerberus' is missing

Ah see thats where you are wrong
The Cerburus mission is only a uboat
placed at the right place right time
The Operation Cerberus is on the campaign files so if you are close by at the right dates you can see it happen

Same with all my single missions - all the info is taken from the Scr not added unit

@Rose

Will take a look at this
Give me some time and will get back to you

I'd like to see this [hopefully a video will be made] but my 6800 simply wouldn't handle it
Another New Years Resolution is to upgrade the graphics card.

Well that's embarassing . I need to brush up on the technicalities. What ship was it that had the 16"-ers? Didn't the Bismarck have 'em? Also, I knew Cerber didn't sound right! I wasn't sure though.

@BBW -- That would be great if you could take a look. I KNOW my system can handle this and I would love to find the root of the problem so I can watch the fireworks!

Just wanted to say I got a CTD with this mission as well. Running an AMD64 3000+ OC'ed to 2.3gHZ, 1 GB of ram, ATI x700 Pro. Just wanted to throw it out there in case it helps.

That makes me feel alot better. Maybe it IS the mission, and not my computer after all (not trying to slag the creators of the mission -- you guys get major points for one of the most spectacular things I've seen on a computer! But maybe you missed this "bug." Maybe it's SH3's fault.)... Is that a good system, Chaos? I'm not good with decifering all those numbers and letters , sorry. Was there a drop in frame-rate or was it smooth until the CTD (as mine was)?

Maybe, if it's not too much to ask, someone could upload Operation Cerber and post it, and I could delete the one I have and replace it with that, just to make sure it is the mission and not me. Only after we find the results of BBWs test, though.

PS: @Seth -- Once exams are finished (tomorrow night), I will repond to your PM.
