Default Questions about importing new aircraft...help needed!

Im trying do import some new airplanes in to sh3 and need help, I would be very grateful if somebody could take the time to answer these questions.

1) I have looked at the stock JU88 unit from sh3 and unpacked its Dat.file.
i opened several of the obj. files up in max - but I need to know what the following parts are for?

JU_88_Mrk01 /02/03 ???
JU_88_helix L/R?
JU_88_Fake helix L/R?

What are these? are they part of the damage model or animated parts like the propellers? I need to know EXactly which part does what.

2) Look at the example below....

Now - This is what worries me the most! I created skin for my planes using max's UWV unwrapper. what do I do with the saved UWV.file from max?
if I dont use it then how will SH3 determine the correct mapping co-ordinates for my models???

3) Does the TGA skin for my model have to stay at a rather ugly looking resolution of 72 dpi? will bumping it up to say 150 be too demanding for SH3 and ruin the games performance?

4)what about all the Non 3d nodes in the dat file do I need to worry about them?

5) will i need to use the hex editor for all this?

Thats all for now.... thanks.

For pics of my models go here. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=101334

Id love to have these models ready in time for GWX. but at the rate im going - thats not likley...
Unless someone more competant can take over the 'modding' bit from me - (even less likely).

Im a noob myself at this but what I learned while trying to make the parked plane mod.

#1.) "Mrk01,02,03" are the roundels(sp)---it's what puts the isignia(ie german cross, american star, etc) on the wings and fuselage--I believe they change the respective " roundel graphic" when you assign them to different countries. If you included the wing isignia in your skin of the plane--you can scale these to 0.0% and import them as same object and they will not show in game---only problem is that your plane will only show the german cross even when assigned to italy or so on.

The helix are the propellers--- and the fake helix is what gives the props their blur to show "spinning" in game---I scaled the fake helix to 0.0% and imported to show the prop not moving in my staitionary plane.

#4.) I believe the non-3d nodes are the "loadouts" in the EQP list and you should not need to change (or can? with pack 3d)

#5.) the newest versions of pack 3d--(v.#4, & #5--which let you assign obj. position in pack 3d) will not accept aircraft dat file. I used v.2 and v.3 but they won't let you change position. But, if you match & name your new obj's to the existing sh3 model obj's---then import them in the same spot--it might work---

Although like I said-i'm a noob at this also--so wait for someone with more knowledge on the subject to weigh in. Too see the few things I learned during my blundering w/pack & 3d modeling see the last few post of this thread http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...ighlight=candy

Good luck with this and hope you get it worked out--the models are great

Yes you are always better leaving the game to add the roundals
Gives you more scope to let more countries have the aircraft
Looking good JU

Thanks for that!

oops - regarding roundels (emblems) mind you apart from italy no other nations would have access to hienkels. still...

what about the way ive created my skin using UWV unwrap (flatten mapping)
wil this present a problem later..?

Yep true
Thirty-two of the Spanish 2.111D aircraft were used in the film Battle of Britain

Thats why its always best in future if you can leave the games roundals on
One aircraft gets used and seen by more ppl

Still a great looking aircraft though
Boris is online - give him a PM as to skin and mapping

Moin,
  1. don´t know, never modded an acft before
  2. texture coordinates are stored in the *.obj file itself. You don´t have to worry about. The *.mtl file that is created when exporting to *.obj only carries the data needed to assign Multi/SubObjectMaps. Some versions of Pack3D seem to import these data not properly. You may fix it using the hex editor. (early stage of my actual project)
  3. You may choose any resolution you like, just keep them square.
  4. Don´t worry about them now. Your unit will work without altering them in the first place. Since almost no one will see them ever it´s just for your ego if you change them, except you´d like to add "specials".
  5. Most probably YES.
Regards,
DD
