Default Contacts on Chart

I'd be grateful if someone could let me know what it is that determines whether a reported contact appears on the chart as a square mark. Sometimes they show sometimes they don't. I'm in Sept 1939 playing 1.4b/TGW on 97% difficulty (-3% for Event Camera availability). Is it something to do with the quality of the crew? It also seems that this is linked to the ID'ing of the contact type when looking through the attack scope. Am I right in thinking that if the contact is ID'ed by the scope (Eg. 'cargo' shows on the Notepad) then the square mark shows on the chart??

Thanks

KC

Maybe it has something to do with the realism settings. IIRC you can check the box saying "map contact update" or something (dont remember exactly..)

If I Remeber Correctly = IIRC

As for radio contacts appearing on the map. Seth is right, the realism setting will stop all contacts on the map showing.

Note, you can change the range in which these contacts will appear by editing the Contacts.cfg file. Have a look and change the ranges.

LOL - that's how you get the Spy Sat to work across the globe, set all radio contact ranges to 999999. Might be overkill but it works.

This is in the contacts.cfg
[ContactSettings]
; Contact settings

Display Range To Opportunity Radio Contacts=300 ;[>0] kilometers
Display Range To Important Radio Contacts=1500 ;[>0] kilometers
Decay Time For Important Radio Contacts=172800 ;[>0] seconds
Decay Time For Opportunity Radio Contacts=32400 ;[>0] seconds
Decay Time For Imprecise Sensor Contacts=600 ;[>0] seconds
Decay Time For Precise Sensor Contacts=60 ;[>0] seconds
Single Contact Min Size=1 ;[>0] minimum numbers of units in this type of group
Small Contact Min Size=3 ;[>0] minimum numbers of units in this type of group
Medium Contact Min Size=7 ;[>0] minimum numbers of units in this type of group
Large Contact Min Size=13 ;[>0] minimum numbers of units in this type of group

[ContactRange]
;under the (right) value a contact is considered as:
Short=1000 ;[m]
Medium=3000 ;[m]
Long=20000 ;[m]

[ContactSpeeds]
;less than each value means (in this order): stationary, slow, medium and fast speed ; over the last value means very fast speed
Merchant=0.1,8,12,35 ;[kts]
Warship=0.1,8,19,35 ;[kts] including uboats
Air=0.1,8,19,35 ;[kts]
Convoy=0.1,8,12,35 ;[kts]

If I want all contacts to show up on the map only when I have a visual sighting (or within visual range) what must be changed?

I noticed that a contact will show up on the map near my position before I even get a visual, I find this kinda unrealistic and annoying.

Change the first two entries to 0 (Opportunity & Important). This means that you will never receive a radio contact.
