SH3 and Grey Wolves mod problem

Hello all,

This is my first post here, so bear with me......

I have recently installed SH3 and have to say it's one of the most satisfying simulation\strategy titles out there. I originally purchased it when it was first released - I was so keen to own it I bought it direct from UBI with the recognition manual that came as a booklet! However, back then my system wasn't powerful enough to run it and so it sat gathering dust. Until 3 weeks ago when I installed it on my new powerful system.

I tried varioations of the install, but by far the best - and what I'm using now - is version SH3 v1.4 installed with the Grey Wolves supermod - hi-res etc.

This huge mod has made such a big difference to the game!

Now for the problem......

When I first launched a career I was using the standard type VII sub, and everything was great - smooth graphics, attacking planes, explosions etc. etc.

But then after sinking over 200,000 tons by May 1940 (and yes, I use full manual settings) I upgraded to a Type IXB sub - then the odd problems began.

OK, I'm out at sea, I've torpedoed a ship, she's listing to port, I surface and fire shells into her hull to make her sink - but, when I line the deck gun up with the ship - all smoke and flames vanish from view....they are only visible when the ship is on the edge of my screen.

Then, if I'm on the surface or looking through the periscope and a bow wave is forming it doesn't appear if I look forward. The bow-wave graphice only appear if I turn the player's 'head' almost 90 degrees and as before they appear on the edge of the screen - most annoying - and takes away much on the 'immersion factor'.

The biggest glitch though - on the map - heading over Scapa FLow to clear north of Scotland to enter the Atlantic - the game freezes - crashes to desktop, and I get a huge stop error appear- asking if I want to send the report etc.

This now happens almost every 15 mins or so. And, has only been doing so since upgrading to a IXB.....most odd.

This was a totally clean install - I removed all trace of SH3 and mods prior to installing it with the Grey Wolves mod.

Please does anyone have a fix for this - perhaps the Grey Wolves team?

Thanks everyone,

Have you tried updating the driver for your graphics card?

Hi, thanks for the replies.

The system is only 3 weeks old, and I checked this already - it is using the latest driver. As for additional mods the only one I have is Grey Wolves.

I did have SH3 installed with the RuB (correct name?), and tried the Tonnage War mod - but when I found out about GW I removed SH3 completely, deleted all orphan files and installed from scratch - patched to 1.4b, then installed GW complete.

The game has been running very smoothly with all options and graphics set - until I upgraded to a IXB. With the type VII I never had any graphics or lock-up problems.

That's very odd. Have you been doing any changes while you were in mid patrol????

My suggestion would be to load a previous save game with the VII boat. Upgrade to IX and see if you have the same problem again.

Did you remember to delete the my documents / SH3 folder? It is a very common mistake and a cause of many problems when re-installing.

Have you tweaked any other files yourself?

I get the same thing with water spray and smoke. Depending on my view, I do not see it. I believe this is just inherent to the game and the graphics card rendering. This never bothered me as a result of that thought. The CTD with this boat is strange indeed. Did you remove the folder inside you MY DOCUMENTS fold when you did the complete uninstall? Also, no mod changes while out of port. Makes for big trouble.

Hi, yes I did delete the folder in My Documents, I went through th system with a fine tooth comb to remove all orphan files.

I haven't modified anything myself, only by adding the GW mod.

As for the reload suggestion I'll give it a go. I have only sunk several ships with the IXB so far, so no great loss. Most of my tonnage was sunk by Gibraltar, using the German ship Thalia as resupply. I eventually returned to Willhelmshaven, and it was there I chose to upgrade to the IXB.

It's certainly very odd though.

Thanks all,

Hi guys,

I took your advice and reloaded back to a type VIIB - and was able to run around no problem. I then put back into port and using renown, moved upto a type VIIC. Again, no problems, sunk 2 ships in the north sea - finishing one off with the deck gun in (surprisingly) calm weather at night. - No graphic problems at all.

So, reloaded back to the type VIIB - then went straight for the IXB - and yep, you guessed it - missing graphics (smoke, bow wave etc.) and it kept crashing to desktop!!

Most odd........

So, no idea why this is happening, but it is definitely something to do with the config of the type IXB.....

Just thought I would pass that info on.

Anyone else suffering this problem?

And, if it's a known (or at least people are aware) problem, will it be fixed for GWX?

Incidentally, I only heard about GWX at the beginning of the week - it certainly soulds like people are keen to get their hands on this one. Does anyone have any screenshots of GWX in action? - Internal sub shots, water effects, weather etc.??

Thanks

It's strange that you don't have a problem with the VII and you have with the IX. Most probably there is something wrong with the individual files for the submarines. I would suggest to reinstall GW. Sorry for not being more helpfull
