I found a wonderful illustrious class carrier sitting in loch ewe and put 3 fish into it, magnetic detonations with torpedoes passing down the bow to the stern. 2 shots in the front and one near the rear. It settled to the bottom of the harbor. No credit awarded. I cant shoot anymore at him because he is facing me head on so impact wont work on his bow.
Reloaded. Tried again. I usually dont reload like this but I was peeved. Same thing. Third try, same thing. So it seems like carriers are invicible cause they cannot sink below the water in the harbors! Playing GW's. |

Had the same thing happen to me once, against a Nelson Battleship.
I used torpedoes that usually blow up ships in one hit (1MX stronger then normal ones), but she wouldn't sink. The DD I hit sank nice. That tanker I hit splat in two, remained above the surface and I got a kill. The Nelson just stood there, slowly taking on water and not sinking ![]() Maybe a bug, or the water isn't deep enought. Just maybe then don't have their boilers on, allowint them to explode :hmm:. But why did the DD sink then? Questions, questions! |

i know the problem well, i too spotted that carrier in lock ewe, got lucky and managed to sink it with 4x impact detonations, it wont sink unless you get the critical shot, if you dont, it will sink by flooding and when it bottoms out it`ll sink no further, the chance of this critical hit is lessened with 100% difficulty and mods like nygm/gw.
i dont know of anything you could do to fix this unless you lower the realism settings which isnt really an option. |

Kinda takes the steam outta doing harbor raids if you cannot sink the juiciest targets!
I got mad and just sank the fiji nearby, 3 destroyers patrolling the waters outside and then rammed a fishing boat for good measure on the way out. |

They cant sink you if you sink them first! Heck, a kill is a kill.
I have a newfound love for those newfangled acoustic torpedoes, they really mangle up those fast moving escorts well since they make all that noise zooming around at 25 knots! The fishing boat was in the wrong place at the wrong time. |

It is a stock bug in SHIII. Large ships that settle on the bottom sometimes don't "sink". The only way around it is to make sure you hit the ships weak points and get them to die before "sinking". Go for the fuel bunkers on merchants and ammo magazines on warships.

Is this fixed in any of the mods? Dont those rely on sinking as well?

I've come across the problem in GW a couple of times. There are no mods that I know of that fix the bug.

Is it really a bug? If a ship settles on a shallow bottom near a port like that it would, possibly, be able to repair the ship. I know the U.S. refloated a few ships from Pearl harbor so it is possible.

I guess it depends on what you call a "sinking". Is it sunk if it is out of action for months or even years? There are certainly cases of uboat skippers claiming tonnage for ships that later were repaired.

I had a simular problem today.
I went to raid Tobruk to help out Fieldmarshall Rommel. For the ones who aren't that familiar with Tobruk: There are 3 ships moored outside of the harbor. One of them is a C2 but is rather hard to sink because with the nets and destroyers nearby it's hard to get in a good position. But the 2 others, one trooptransport and one LCT (? that ship with the tanks on top), are easier. I got into position without any problems, decided to take on the trooptransport first because it's worth more renown. I thought I fired perfect, and it would be a oneshot kill. Well I hit it right in the middle but nothing would happen. No worries, perhaps she would go down silently so I got in position for the LCT. Again I thought that I fired so perfect this would be easy. But except from a truck that dropped into sea nothing happened. Scared of incoming Zerstörers and wasting more torpedoes I decided to withdraw back and wait it out. When I check my periscope an hour later I saw that the LCT's bow was low in the water but was stable so I fired another fish at her rear and that did the job. So now I switched my attention to the trooptransport and she was laying there quietly, a bit twisted over to port. Losing patience I fired a 2nd torp. I retreated once more confident that the job was done. But after several hours which I used to reload my tube1 (quite risky doing this in the mids of destroyers) I still hadn't received the 'She's going down' message so I went back a third time and fired a third fish into her. Now she began banking heavily, decks awash and she would go down. At least that's what I thought. I kept waiting and waiting but this was one determined boat. I wasn't going to waste any more torps on this one. I maneuvred my boat between the trooptransport and the coastline. Placing me out of fire from the deckguns of the trooptransport and hiding myself behind the trooptransport for the fire of the destroyers. I surfaced and began pounding her on the other side. In the meanwhile the destroyers where shooting back at me but their shells were plunging on the trooptransport or falling onto the coastline. By the way, the stationary destroyer didn't moved or anything in the whole proces, and the others seemed to be having problems with the subnets because they were acting weird aswell. Anyway, the trooptransport sank, don't know whether it was by my doing or the friendly fire but I got credited and that's what count. I was able to sneak to safety without problems. (although one shell came awfully close) And after 13hours (!) in that small harbor I finally got those 2 to the bottom. Luckily I knew from earlier experiences that the water was deep enough to sink them, otherwise I wouldn't have been so determined. |
