Default Late 42 early 43 Survival information

I command a IXD-2. Love the big boat, but the allies are better killers of uboats now. I've got several questions...I'd appreciate any and all help on the answers.

What is the best route out of the Bay of Biscay and into the South Atlantic?
What speed is the maximum the tc can be set on and still give you a chance of diving out of trouble?
What is the maximum range of patrolling aircraft ie. sunderland, liberator and catalina?
What are the best submarine upgrades for that period of time.

Thanks,

SilentwayIII

Alot depends on if the mod your using has the 2nd support group in or not. But generally speaking there is no best route out of biscay bay to get into the south atlantic.

You have two options really.
a.) start snorkeling soon after you leave port, and never surface. Snorkel long enough to recharge bats, and bring the mast down. Although this isnt REALLY neccessary tell 44, and you'll hate it when it becomes neccessary.

b.) Run with decks awash and be ready to dive at any tiime. Decks awash will cut your dive time by half.

As for TC, i normaly run at like 512 if i think im going to crash dive soon. (Try late 44, eeessshhh). If i im not expecting a whole lot ill run at 1024. transatlantic ill kick it up to 2048. The key here is that in my main.cfg in mydocuments for the TC settings on aicraft warning i put it at -1. So anytime an aircraft is spotted, the game pauses. THis way if im afk , or can't bring TC fast enough, the game pauses so i can react to it. What range the aircraft is spotted at seeminglly varies on weather. If the weather is overcast but clear, or light fog, im liable to dive rather then risk being surpised.

The British pretty much own the bay during the war. Me? I go around through the North Atlantic and down.

I run TC at 512.

Patrolling planes: in real life I believe these planes had 2000 mile range. I do not know how these planes and range are modelled into the game. You also have to be aware of aircraft carrier based planes.

Best upgrade? Klingon Cloaking Device ....just about anything that can give you the edge!!!!

Going north and then down is probably a good idea. Theres usualy at least one HK group that just outside of the bay. East, or SE. That said, i normally dont worry too much about them unless caught on the surface via their radar. If your soundman can tap them out, you can avoid them easily enough. IF they detect you on the surface, they'll make a beeline for you.

If your serious about survival, you'll spend most of your time submerged. Im not kdding, in late 44, i did a 130 day patrol and only surfaced ONCE, and that was entering lorient. Everytime i tried to surface, invariably, aircraft would find me. ANother time, i think i crashed dived probably 30-40 times before finally cleared the bay. IXD2, decks awash is critical. Your stern hangs topside a wee bit longer.
