Default DiD

Ok, I started dead is dead in SH3. How depressing that I cannot just start my previous save after I have been sunk. U-49, Scapa Flow, 1940, VIIB sunk with all hands. GOD REST THEIR SOULS! Oh well, I'll go get another boat...there is plenty back home Maybe I take something more sporty!

Well, if you didn't play DiD, then none of your decisions as a captain would matter, would they? If you see a situation and chance it, If you mess up, oh well, reload. But in the same situation where dead means dead, it's not quite the same thing is it?

Tis' true! My poor decision to take on two Corvettes with my deck gun and simply not noticing the third Corvette in the shadows was the end all for 51 beloved countrymen! I guess silent running was in order. Is this were they say better luck next time?

Will power. You must resist the tempation to load your last save when you get killed. Of course it's entirely up to the player as it gives a little more of an edge to the decisions you make.

I always do this I never reload after I am killed, I play high realism and have had some long patrols with hairy moments but I prefer to play this way, I think of reloading a save as cheating.

:hmm: Dead Is Dead Eh?!

well, you went to scapa flow harbour? then u where asking for trouble as a DiD player I wouldnt raid harbours unless I,m 100% sure I would have a chance...or I,m just having an stupid Idea of raiding harbours like Gibraltar. Gibraltar is easy..no Anti Sub defences underwater...the only enemy is the air in ur sub...because on the surface its crowded with DD/PT boats.

Yeah, I play DiD now. Still continued harbour raiding, right up until last night. Seeing as I hadn't yet died plahing DiD, I hadn't yet experienced doing something incredibly stupid and losing a career.

Yesterday, decided that the HMS Formidable was a good scalp to take and infiltrated Scapa Flow. Thing's looked rosy - blew up the carrier with two torps, made my way off towards the east exit again, Silent running. Nobody knew where I was, the DDs were searching for me about 500m away. Then a destroyer bent on reaching his mates hit my conning tower, and all hell broke loose.

Now, Oblt. Max Steinhauser is in captivity after the diesels were destroyed. I had to blow ballast to escape, but with the sub filling up, no engines, there was no way I was getting back to Germany.

This was in a Type IIa, and I was playing at 74% realism (no external view, just some help with targetting and map contacts). Now I'll be thinking a hell of a lot more about what I do in SH3, and despite losing a great career, I love playing DiD. I wouldn't have it any other way

Cheers

I went to Scapa. Seem pretty quiet until the Corvettes starting coming out of the darkness like cock roaches. I had three surrounding me. If I submerged, I had only 12m to play with. Still bad odds. I decided to duke it out on the surface. I was doing OK until the third corvette came out of the darkness on my stern and was just blasting away. A collision but U-49 to rest. This is my first DiD. U-49 will be put to rest and a new Commander will be leaving port shortly
