Try exiting through the middle of the port. There are anti-submarine nets and minefields on the sides of ports. Are you using mods? What ports are particularly problematic? I can tell you where the minefields and nets are if you can tell me what ports are problems for you.

Runnnig Grey Wolves ?
Prob hitting sub nets or mines. Check the maps (Small tabs at upper left of the screen). There is one that shows the harbors protections. If you zoom the map way in you will see a layout of the harbor. Dont plot your course through the seawalls (shrug). |

You're hitting mines or the subnets. Check your navigation maps to plot a course to avoid them. You can find this map on the top part of the navigation screen next to the clock. Click on it and drag it. (it's a small white bit on the top of the screen. there are two sheets with speed-distance convertions -basically numbers- and one sheet with all the friendly ports -that's the one you need)
Otherwise you can install (GW if that's the one you're using) without the friendly mines and subnets. If you need more information let me know |

If you set your sub to real time (1) and use your observation periscope, then that can help. Or you can use your free view cam, if it's enabled, below the surface. It takes time, but it works.

Little tiney tabs upper left of the screen in the nav map view. Just to the left of the stop watch tab.
Click and drag them over the nav map. Drag them back when done. There easy to miss ![]() |

You've actually got an escort in and out of port in Grey Wolves, realize it or not.
Upon starting your patrol, you should see a Destroyer Escort ahead of you. That's your escort ship. Follow it until it turns back to port. When returning from a patrol, just wait for it to arrive and guide you in. Or, as a rule of thumb (which applies to all friendly ports and most enemy ones), stay in the middle of the strait/channel/river/sea. Mine-fields and sub nets are close to shore.

If in doubt just keep following your escort on the surface.
