Liberty ship pictures

I haven't been around here in a while (I was a bit perturbed with the SH3 's lack of action sequence jumping and grew bored of the game) but I got the chance to see a liberty ship in drydock today and snapped a bunch of pics. I'll get them up and posted later tonight if anyone is interested in seeing them.

From todays drydock of the SS John Brown. one of only three liberty ships still afloat. She's a living museum Homeported in Baltimore Md. She still conducts harbor trips and travels under her own power.

Stbd AA gun. The funky looking material surrounding the gun is a concrete mix. The entire bridge, and all gun emplacements are armored with it. The bridge is like a big concrete bunker overlaying all the steel. They really were designed to protect the crew!

Looking through the tiny bridge windows. I don't know how they steered this thing from the pilothose, visibility is horrible. The crew said they used the weatherdeck wheel whenever they could so the helmsman could see where they were going.

These are the only three windows on the bridge. the crewmember is closing the stbd window, and when both the upper and lower shutters are closed there are only very small slits to see out of. They sailed that way when they were under attack. So I guess that does explain the erratic movements and collisions of the ships in the convoys after the first torpedos hit. Really realistic or merely a programming coincidene???

Engine room. This engine is a massive steam driven beast. Hand lubricated, hand (throttle) operated and I have to imagine dangerous as hell when moving. The steam cylinders are a deck above and these connecting rods drive the crankshaft, which in turn drives the prop. Its a direct drive system, so when they are running at 75 Rpms the prop is also spinning @ 75 rpms. They have a DVD of the plant when its in operation and it looks like a nightmarish seige machine. At the bottom you can see the small copper pipes that connect to the smaller steel rods. One for reverse one for forward. The massive connecting rods (bigger and greayish) are connected to the crank below and the pistons above. You can see the connection in the foreground at the bottom. The steel boxes on either side of the connecting rods are there to collect the oil that flings around when it is spinning. The sump is full of oil and the crank just scoops it up every revolution and lubricates all the important parts. The chief engineer got the job because he was an engineer on a differnt Liberty ship during the war!

And last, but definiately not least. Brownie. I believe she has been on board since the war.

:rotfl: And I thought that was a new stealthy magnetic propulsion drive! No tell tale rpm noise from the shaft passing through the shaft seals! Brilliant!

Very well done! I'll be even happier sinking those accursed Liberty ships now that I know that no matter how many I bring down, there will always remain these 3 for us to look at!
