You should have seen the "flight simulator" I saw at the aviation museum in Hamilton used to train pilots in WWII. A contraption that traced the pilot's "flight" with a pencil.

i suppose any practice is good, i cant see any harm in a way of showing the basics to people before sticking them in the boat at sea.

Training aids were used back during the Roman Empire days. So to see "analog" simulators isn't surprising. I guess what is surprising is the sophistication of the 50's and 60's simulators. Silicon Graphics flight trainers back in the early 80's were pretty darn sophisticated, too.
