WIN_XP running into LINUX

This is not new, but today I made it sucessfully. :p

I would like to share it with whoever interested.

The best part of this:
- No more virus, spyware, hacking, companies spying me ...........
- M$ Windows is running isolated from the internet, into a sandbox.

It is a huge achievement after 2 weeks fighting against error after error.
By the way, I am not trying to impress you, I just want to share it with others Windows users, ---> Yes, other choice is available.

It´s an expensive choice, VMware costs about €200. For the vast majority the uses for a WinXP machine under Linux instead of a real WinXP installation are *very* limited.

I´m totally in love with VMware btw, I use it to run and test Linux distros under WinXP.

Vmware Server is for free ---> http://www.vmware.com/products/server/
And you can run any virtual machine with Vmware Player, it is for free too ---> http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

Could you elaborate on this and how you got it working? I've just started playing with Ubuntu and am interested in doing what you do.

I was just wondering how good is Linux? right now were building up one of old computers for my second official computer project :p and once shes running switching her over to linux, since my dad has always wanted to try a linux machine (he likes penguins)

There is still more software available for Windows, but a Linux distro like Ubuntu is more feature packed 'out of the box'. I just started the installation program and a few clicks later I had a running system with Mozilla, OpenOffice, the Gimp etc ready to go. There's an install option on the main menu that lets you download and install a large selection of software by just clicking a checkbox in a list.

I don't think Linux for the desktop ever will quite catch up with it's commercial competitors Windows and Mac OS X, but it may have reached the point where you could use it without feeling the need for more bells and whistles.

Servers are different beast than desktops, and Linux is big on them. Some people, for example Oracle's flamboyant head honcho Larry Ellison, think that Linux will completely dominate the server market in the future.

Good to know that VMware Server, which also can run under XP, is free now (the Workstation version isn´t for whatever reason). Anyway, the point still is that for most users it´s no alternative to a real Windows installation. It´s still great though.

In my particular case, I use Linux as my first OS and I have a second computer with WinXP for gaming, of course the XP computer is without internet connection at all (too dangerous).

The Vmware's purpose is to use some especializated design software running only with XP, but into Linux.

This is very handy, and I avoid the inconvenience of double booting.
At the same time I can work in another tasks and to be connected to the internet with Linux.

Is this better than just having a dual OS setup? Say Mandrake & XP.

Why not just run XP on one drive and linux on the other.

Because it´s a pain in the ass to reboot to another OS.

If you are happy with Linux, use Linux. If you are happy with Windows, use Windows. There should be no need to switch to another OS several times per day. It makes for example no sense to play games under XP and then reboot to Linux just because you want to use Internet. If you want to test an OS or need to develop things for another OS use VMware.

Best plan - use both!

Both have their pluses and minuses. Both have a ton of software created for them. The best media player app in existance runs exclusevely on Linux for example. WIndows has the edge on software titles, but most things cost money on Windows where they are free on Linux. I'll quit here, but the point is - if you use only one OS, you are missing out!

PS. Dual booting is not a big deal - takes all of 15 seconds on a decently fast machine

I've had XP for three years and I have yet to catch anything from the internet. I would say thats pretty safe.
