Default 21" monitor recomendations...

Been running this 21" CRT monitor I writing this on right now for a couple days, and I've decided to return to my 19" CRT. I can't find a 21" that I like that compares to the Color and Contrast of my LG 19"! Hellpp! My LG has such high black levels, exceptional color, and incredible contrast - its the ideal gaming monitor even though it is a few years old!

The problem is, the 21 on my desk right now is a Sony Aperture Grill based IBM monitor. The LG is an Invar Shadowmask based monitor which typically isn't as sharp and has more glare than a Sony based tube, but will be much much better color wise - better than LCD as well, and CRT is always a better gaming monitor than LCD for more than one reason.

So, my question is, who is left that makes Invar Shadowmask based CRT's in large sizes?

The best company for large sized monitors like that was Hitachi, but they no longer make them. I see Samsung has one - http://www.samsung.com/Products/Moni.../CF21GSBUK.asp - and I love Samsung monitors. I am a current owner of a Samsung 8 ms LCD flat panel (currently on a secondary computer) and that is one of the best flat panels I have ever seen. I also have seen their smaller CRT's which are also some of the best CRT's I have seen, but I know nothing of their larger CRT's. Who else makes large CRT's that are Invar Shadowmask based??? This is harder that I thought.

-S

PS. I don't want a $2000 CRT either. $500 to $700 is a good range.

PPS. I have 2x Sony 21" at work too (dual screen), same problem there. Looks OK for everyday biz use though.

bb - got to go unplug this 21" and replace with my 19".

Anyone want to buy a 21" Sony based monitor? Not as good color wise, but still good for general business apps and CAD.

Looks better on the 19 because it has better color. On the 21, it just has more screen space - which is what you want for a more engrossing experience.

Ahh! My 19"! This is a damn fine monitor! I have 3x 21" monitors I use a daily basis, 2 that are on my desk at work in a dual monitor configuration, and this little 19" still outshines them all!

Ouch! Really? Is the public just that uneducated on the drawbacks to LCD's? I mean, take a game like SHIII - it forces 1024x768, which looks completely ugly on a stock 1280x1024 LCD monitor!

Found a Viewsonic now too:

I use to have two 17in monitors setup as dual, when i first got SH3 i was hoping i would be able to spread the game over both monitors, like in Battlefield 2 one monitor for gameplay and one for the commanders screen. But SH3 never worked this way. One monitor would always auto switch off whenever i tried it Still having two monitors is better than one.

Yeah - thought about using the 21" at home for a secondary monitor. Probllem is, my desk has soo much hardware on it, no room! At work though, I typically have a RA connection to a server on one, and normal sys on the other so I can't live without it.

I'd agree with you....CRTs are better for gaming and in general. The only draw back, and I suppose the only reason why I wouldn't go back, is the space I save using TFTs.

I cannot argue that. That is why I bought LCD's for one desk - I had a 15" CRT on it, but ditched it for a much larger Samsung LCD - equal in viewable size to my 19". No way I could put something like a 19" in that area - no room!

I have a 2 Viewsonic 17 inch monitors one for home and one for work (e70fb&g70mb). I have had the one at home for about 3 years and love it.

The viewsonic P225 is still around and has shadowmask technology. It would appear you could get one shipped for about $600. If I had the money, I would buy one for me, but I dont.

The real sad part is by the time I get enough money they will be gone.

I doubt they will be gone. People still want them. Just not as popular as LCD. I think I'll pick up a Samsung sooner or later, but I'll try out the dual monitor situation at home for a while. Everyone I know has dual monitors already anyway, so might as well.

So I wonder what would be better.

Viewsonic p225

or

Samsung Syncmaster 1100 MB

The Samsung is only $452.00 and has a 3 year waranty too.
