Default Can you count the number of depth charges?

Just curious - this has probably been asked before but I'm not a gifted searcher.

Can you count the number of DC or DC patterns dropped by enemies or is this even remotely modeled in the game (plain vanilla; no mods)? Another way to ask it is "Do AI ASW ships ever run out of DC?" If so, does anyone know a good source of info on various ASW ships and their DC patterns?

Thanks!

Yes, this has been discussed before. If I remember right, the answer is yes, the warships run out of DC´s (IF I REMEMBER RIGHT).

And yes, you can count the DC´s. Just count the explosions.

I figured. Thanks - counting's not a problem, but how do I know when he's run out (assuming I know what type of ship it is that's up there)? I mean, does a Tribal carry 17 and a Black Swan 30, or what?

"Now, I know what you're thinkin'. Did he fire six shots, or only 5? Well to tell you the truth in the confusion I kinda lost track myself. So you gotta ask yourself one question...."

They're usually too far away from me to discern individual explosions so I never count. :P

Yes, they do run out of DCs.

After I sunk my first BB, 6 DDs DCed me for 16 hours.
All ran eventually out of DCs, except one who only had left some of the type that launches from the side.

But how many they have from the start, I have no idea.

Thanks!
DD/Corvettes ran out of Deep Charges and Ammo as well...

Its funny to see them without those two things while surfaced and hitting them with a deck gun

(I havent tried yet with BBs/Cruisers but I guess that would be the same - they probably ran out of shells aswell)

Lucky you! :P

@Graaf - Thanks; it'd be interesting to know if the game follows history on this. I have a feeling it does, but am not sure if the number varies from ship to ship or if there's just a generic number for all AI ships.

Depending on the ship type and the date, escorts could carry anywhere from 36 to over 100 depth charges. I also wonder if the came allows for this.

100! Thanks for the info, Steve. Think maybe I'll start a test career or two and see if I can tally up who drops what and how many. Will post back if I learn anything (don't hold your breath ).

[Edit: Sorry thyro, missed your post - hate to say it, but I don't think I could stay alive on the surface long enough with a KGV long enough to count shells! :P ]

Usually if i count over 30 depth charges.. I know im doomed. I counted once or twice. Everytime i count over 30, my u-boot dies and suffers massive damage. Under 30 i usually always survive.

More helpful info! Thanks, I'll keep that in mind as I test.

Ok, I've only had time to experiment once, and I had to save/quit in the middle of it, but so far I've got 1 Clemson-class and 2 corvettes. The DD has dropped 23 thus far, and I don't think the corvettes have dropped any yet. They've all headed off to rejoin the convoy but I'm going to do the end run and attack again, so I'll see if that number goes up.

I suppose this is sort of a wild goose chase, because the exact number of possible DC has to be in the program code somewhere - I just don't know where to look for it. Don't have a clue about programming. Wonder if any of the modders would know whether it's a historical number or not?

Well I took a couple liberties in the name of science. I got down to three torpedoes and decided that on the next attack, I'd try to get 2 out of the 3 escorts and then ride out whatever the last one threw at me. Down went the Clemson and one of the Flowers. The remaining Flower dropped 74 depth charges, by my count (say plus or minus 2); on its last attack run it was pinging like mad, but even though it approached my location (it had to know where I was), it held a course crossing my stern and then sped up and went off to rejoin the convoy without dropping any more.

Anybody know if 74 is a historic number for a Flower corvette in July, 1942?
