Default This is an Oscar II

Ok...ok...I know, I know...I know what you're all thinking, that there's no way in hell that's an Oscar II...there's only one submarine in the world that can be and that's the Typhoon (or Akula if you're thinking Russkie).
However, keep with me for a moment as I relate to you my experience of a short shopping trip in Ipswich. I was browsing through the military/war section of WH Smiths in the hope of picking up a good sub book (I found Hostile Waters in there once for 50p!!) and I come across the paperback version of Janes, I presume it's the latest addition (Forgot to check ) and I had a quick look at it...and feeling somewhat big headed, I said to my fiance: "Go on then, pick out one of the submarines at random and put your finger over the name and I'll tell you what it is just by the picture."
She gives me one of those 'looks' (you guys out there with ladies...you'll know what I mean) but flicks through the book and picks out a picture of a Typhoon. "Aha," thinks I "She cannot have picked an easier submarine to ID!!"
"That's easy...it's a Typhoon."
"No..."
"WHAT?!"
"That's not what it says here...it says Oscar II."
"Wha...?"
Has the world gone mad? Have I somehow been transported to a time and space where the Oscar II's were called Typhoons and the Typhoons called Oscar II...I had to know!
I take the book off the missus, who then carries on browsing the shelves for manga, and flick forward a couple of pages...before breathing a sigh of relief...there she is, a picture of a Typhoon with the correct title.
The world hasn't gone mad...only Janes

Actually one Soviet tactic was to use ICBMs from their forward deployed SSBNs against carrier battlegroups.

That brings up an interesting dilemna, assuming the carrier group was attacked in the middle of the ocean in international waters: would there then be justification to retaliate with a continental nuclear strike? Hmm. On the one hand that's certainly an equalizer rendering surface fleets effectively obsolete; but on the other hand, if the response is an ICBM aimed at Moscow then you've paid off an especially expensive carrier group.

they're both wrong... it's not a Typhoon or an OscarII...

it's one of those newly modded subs with that silent propulsion system... just ask Jack Ryan... he knows for sure!!

Oberon, have you sent a message to Janes about their error?I have never heard about using a ballistic missile against a battle-group though i do remember some analysts getting worried about the cccp using flat trajectory ballistic missiles against the conus.I think it turned out to be a load of rubbish
