On my 3rd patrol. Driving my little IIa.
![]() Problem is: with only 5 torpedoes I am finding it hard to sink more than one ship per patrol. ![]() I usually salvo two per target. Seems to work the first time. But for some strange reason, I cannot sink a second vessel... :hmm: I ask this because on my last patrol, I fired two torpedoes into a C2, One hit amidships and he started to list....Fired again, hit him towards the stern....he still did not go down. ![]() Anyway, I was wondering if he did eventually go down, would I get credit when I arrived in port? I did not see him sink though :hmm: thanks |

C2s are the most aggravating, torpedoe eating sons of sea monsters out there. Be happy when you find coastal or small merchants in a type II. They go down just fine with a single eel. (Try adding rice and soy sauce for extra flavor)

During my most recent, and shortest career, I was experimenting with 100% realism (well almost, I left the event cam on to track my torps while learning manual targetting) and on my maiden voyage in my little IIA encountered a C2. Heavy seas ruled out a magnetic shot and prior experience has taught me you're lucky to sink one with even two "contact" torps @ 1 m depth so I setup a 3 torp fan shot. I was expecting at least one torp to miss as, like I said, I'm still new to manual targetting.
Anyway, 1 hit in the stern, two misses from first spread. C3 begins to burn aft but doesn't even slow. Enemy begins to zigzag so I decide to move off well out of his visual range while I reload, expecting him to return to previous course eventually. Do that and then go to flank speed to outflank him. Setup a 2nd 90 deg intercept after outflanking and fire a 2nd fan shot with my remaining two torps. One miss, one hit again in the stern. Same result as before: C3 continues to burn aft but no signs of sinking or slowing. Wait a suitable period just in case. Eventually after no change observed get very frustrated (engagement has taken at least an hour of real time as I hadn't used any TC during it) and decide to ram! Inititial collision, at flank speed 11 Knots, no damage to either of us. Repeat several times amd on fourth attempt we take damage (hull dropped from 100% to 30%). Undaunted (if anything more determined), proceed to ram again at flank. Result: pressure hull shatters, all hands lost. My shortest career. Lessons learned: 1. Need to continue practicing my aiming and fan shots are ideal until I improve enough to sink the entire spread into a single target, which may take a while (patience!). 2. No more ramming. 3. No more engaging C2s in IIAs. They'll keep until I get a bigger boat. |

The first ship I sank in patrol #3 was a C-2. Fired a doubleshot, hit with one, he split in two went down in 2 minutes :hmm: I play at 92% with external view for screens only, and don't use magnetic pistols, since I only carry G7a which only used a contact pistol.

In my prior campaign I'd started with a type VIIb (7th flotilla in Sept 1939) and eventually, after transferring to the 2nd flotilla, upgraded to a IXb then IXc and with those boats I always fired an initial two torp spread at C2s (I was using auto targetting then). Most of the time both torps would hit it, and, though it didn't always sink it, it would cripple it making quick and easy to swing around and fire a stern torp for the coup de grace.
I got pretty bored in that campaign by Nov '92 and voluntarily "retired". After 10 exciting patrols in my IIVb in the Noth Atlantic between scapa flow and regions just north of the Bay of Biscay, all 7 of my type IX patrols were between Gibraltor and Free Town. Thus, no convoys, no "action". The most excitement I'd seen during my time in type IXs were the first time I got surprised (on my 13th partol and 3rd in the IXb) by an air attack after sailing out of Lorient, and in the ensuing battle a bomb was dropped close enough to kill my two flak gunners and damage the guns and conning tower (my WO was spared, thankfully) and the second time was when returning home the Freetown area and got surprised by a flower corvette southwest of Gibraltor (in medium fog, he was 2000 meters away and already firing on us before my lookouts spotted him). No casualties in that encounter but my only one with a warship in seven consecutive type IX patrols. So I retired thinking that should a similar situation again occur, at least if I'm using manual targetting I'll have enough to do to keep me interested. In a similar theme I also installed, for the first time, SH3 Commander and IUB. I'm also at, officially, ~92% realism as I'd forgotten that in addition to the event cam I have the periscope stabalizer turned on now too (to make the stadiometer a little easier to use in rough seas when calculating range). |

I've marked a ship's location that is sitting dead in the water and then gone off to chase the convoy it came from. I have returned along the same bearing to finnish it off only to find the ship gone and no credit for sinking it. |

Well, I've had both experiences. I have damaged a ship, moved off in pursuit of another, and had the first one sink while it was well out of view. I got credit for it. I've also immobilized a ship, sat there waiting for 2+ hours just to see if it was going to sink, sail off in pursuit of a new hydrophone contact that popped up while I was waiting, and the immobilized ship was gone by the time I got back. I have no idea if the second case was due to a damage control party getting the engines/drive back working and the ship sailing off, or if the ship sank and I didn't get credit for it.

Yes, and I've watched them sink before my very eyes and even took a snap-shot with my Leica (cntl-F11) as the sea swallowed the remains and DID NOT get credit for the kill.

I have a question with concerning this as well.
On my second patrol in my IIA, I tracked down a British small merchant. Due to my angle of attack I ruled out using an impact pistol. I set the torpedo's running depth and waited until I was within 1000m. I sunk the ship with one torpedo and I watched the ship sink to the bottom (I was off the coast of England around the Firth of Forth so the ocean depth was quite shallow). After sinking the ship I surfaced and sent a patrol report. Later it was replied to with "Be more aggresive." I saved and exited and come back the next day. I sunk another ship then and saved, and exited again. It only said that I had sunk one ship and recorded only the tonnage of that ship. I watched both ships hit the bottom and sent reports. Why am I only getting credit for one? I sent reports for both, but Bdu only credited me with one? |

I chalk it up to a snafu at Hq. Some clerk misplaced the radio report and it got covered up with tons of paperwork in BdU's archives. Some REMF lost the freakin' report....a common tale, but true.
I guess it's why we sometimes see on the news of some old vet of WW2 finally getting awards he earned during the war...somebody found the report! Cheers,

I think I've pinned it down to not having a Weapons Officer on deck at the time. I remember at the time of torpedo impact I had no "Torpedo Impact!" nor a "Enemy Ship Destroyed!".
