Default Silent Hunter vs Dangerous Waters?

Hi Guys,

Im a little new here and I was looking at Silent Hunter and other submarine games and I spotted dangerous Waters. Anyone in this forum have both and which do you prefer? I only ask because it seems the UK release of DW is going to have loads of extra stuff.

Take a look at Game.net and look at the preorder incentive?

Im confused and dont know what to get now! Shall I just get both?!

I don't know about DW. Never played it, so it would be unfair to express an opinion.

Silent Hunter III is the best computer game I have ever player. By far. And the modding community rocks

I don't know much about DW either but do know that I am hooked on SH3 now for about 6 months and am not ready yet for a long time to quit playing!

Dangerous Waters is good, more harder to learn than SH3. You can man not only modern subs but the FFG, MH 60R and the PC3 Orion.

From my experince more time is needed playing DW learning it. One important thing i might add is once you work out how to detect targets on sonar and fire that torpedo, it gets very exciting

I would say toss a coin. :|\

Yeah SH III rocks in terms of graphics but once you complete the dynamic campaign you will soon lose interest in the game as multiplayer basically doesn't exist.
As for DW, well its a very good game in singleplayer but it definitely shines in multiplayer.
I have been playing DW since april 2005 and believe me when I say that there isn't another game which has a multiplayer component as complex and fun as DW's.
In multiplayer you can not only commmand a single platform (between nuclear subs such as the seawolf, los angeles 688, the russian akula, also diesel submarines such as the kilo, or the frigate OPH, or the anti-submarine warfare helicopter mh-60r or the orion p-3 ) but you can decide to have more players on each platform so as to have a real crew manning all the stations.
Blue side and Red side can coordinate their efforts and tactics to win the match etc....
Another plus is the mission editor, its very flexible and a lot of interesting single player and multiplayer missions have been created by the community.
A long time member of this form (Subguru) has even created a campaign based on Tom Clancy's novel Red Storm Rising. :|\
I ask you, how much better can it get ?
Graphicwise the game is ok, you won't get the shiny graphics of SH III but then its not really important, once you start playing and learning all the units with the pro-cons , the different tactics etc... you will get hooked and play this game for years to come.

Hard to compare. They are quite different games, despite being both submarine simulators.
Also WW II and modern style submarine gameplay is totally different.

SH3 is more arcade and concentrates on shiny graphics but seriously lacks in the realism and simulation department. DW is more a simulation concentrating on realistic behaviour and correct modelling of reality. Graphics in DW are functional, so say it the polite way.

SH3 is easy to learn and get into, DW is quite complex and you need to read some 80 pages manual. Reminds me of the good old days when games shipped with monster manuals, not just a booklet with more pictures than text. DW requires a lot of patience to get into, but it's very rewarding.

SH3 was released in a premature state and was not finished (basically you need mods to fix all the bugs and missing features, if possible). DW is quite mature and except very minor issues works out of the box. DW is still actively supported by the publisher, while SH3 is history for Ubisoft now.

I personally find SH3 more immersive. It's a blast when the you-are-hunted feeling kicks in, or you are doing a night surface attack. Never got this thrill out of DW so far.

I bought both games around the same about 10 months ago and still play both of them. That hardly happens to other games. This fact should tell I like both. :-)

To sum it up, hard to compare. I wouldn't call one of them the better game. They are both great games. If you enjoy submarines, you will have fun with both SH3 and DW.

I played DW extensively last year. Great game, however, not as detailed as SHIII. Crew interaction in SHIII is incredible. With all the mods available for SHIII makes it a better choice.

DW was patched twice I believe, and there are still some annoying bugs: for one, radar cannot detect snorkel masts or radio masts, sub must be completely surfaced for radar detection. In the modern era, this is totally unrealistic

AI is not real challenging in DW, subs are not aggresive at all, not a challenge to kill. I drove mostly the Kilo class Diesel/electric...maybe thats why I love this game...a real challenge in the face of ultra techno nukes.. The Kilo in DW did not have a fuel supply, only battery energy.

In short DW is Ok...SHIII is incredible!

In SHIII we have the opposite problem. Once you raise your snorchel, airplanes and DDs start swarming on you, as if they had sensors of the 21st century!

De-Pends on yer' taste, Mate.

DW is too modern for me and the whole Nucler Sub's theme does not appeal to me!

I like the WW II setting and the whole U-Boat stuff from back then better.
And besides DW is very complex.
The only Complex sim i play is Falcon. And it will most likely stay that way! lol.

I'm with Myxale: I don't mind the complexity, I just don't get turned on by the modern stuff.

Same for me: prefer WWII Sub sims (and u-boats specifically, which is why SH3 rocks) and modern flight sims (mostly Falcon ever since getting hooked on Falcon 3 and its massive manual, the last of its type I'd ever seen (Falcon 4 I didn't get until Microprose went under so I wound up with the usual PDF manuals - not sure if this was so for the early releases as well).

I really miss nice manuals. These days I almost feel ripped off when I shell out the same $60 and get a cd and a pamphlet for a manual no thicker than the accompanying advertising brochures.

I have both. I bought SHIII first and I got hooked for two weeks but then when I got DW and I started playing it, I didn't come back. The feature I like in DW is the fact that you play multi-station, that is, two or more players on the same platform (sub, FFG, Orion and helo) manning different stations (sonar, radar, acustics, etc...)...

Definately, SHII is the best in WWII sub simulation and DW is the best in modern warfare simulation...
