Default Round or flat earth? -- Trans-Atlantic Plotting

All,
I'm getting ready to make a Trans-Atlantic voyage and was wondering if SH3 models a round or flat earth? It seems that when I plot a Great Circle Route (north up to Greenland and then down the coast from Newfoundland) it actually is a longer path than if I just plot one straight across to America.

Also, what was the historical optimal path to the Carribbean and S. America?

Thanks,
Hitch
