Processer upgrade help.

How do you tell what you can upgrade your processer too?
I have a Presario 5000 with a 1.6 Ghz Pentium 4.

Please download and install CPU-Z, then post the mainboard and CPU details (take a screenshot):

Go into your BIOS and find out the Front Side Bus speed. From there, you can determine how fast you can upgrade the processor to. Also, don't forget to write down the "socket set".

Your processor is a Willamette-cored P4. It's also either a Socket 423 or a Socket 478 chip. If it is a 423 chip (which I suspect it is at only 1.6GHz), there is no real viable upgrade path other than getting an entirely new computer. If, on the other hand, it is a Socket 478 chip, than upgrades are possible, but as previously mentioned, it depends on the FSB speed of your chip, which can be determined using CPU-Z.

You will have to look up your mainboard's specificiations. The voltage-regulator-modules (VRM's) can only handle so much current (and the resulting heat), and that is what processor you will be limited to. The manufacturer should have specs.

If they don't, then you'll have to do a bit more digging for other people's posts, and/or the actual vrm's on your mainboard.

It appears that my initial assumption was wrong, and you do, in fact have a Socket 478 processor. However, your FSB is only 400 MHz which may going to limit you depending on the Mainboard. If you could give us a screenie of that info, that would help immensely.

OK...so the bad news is that your board is a proprietary Compaq model who's max FSB is the 400MHz that you're already at. That limits your upgrade options to the point where it is not worth it to bother, as your board will not support 533 or 800MHz processors. Therefore, your options: stick with what you've got, or buy a new computer.

What you probably also need is a BIOS update, yours is very old.
