Default Help me choose my sub sim!

With so many to choose from, I am really not sure which one to get. I do have Enigma and I love it. I love the story line to it and I like that you can hop in a surface vessel too. So let’s take Enigma off the list of course.

Out of all the others, which one would you guys recommend? I am looking for high realism, good single player campaign, nice graphics, good emersion, and good community support.

I have limited experience with just about all naval games. I am usually a fly boy and play IL2 and Lock on and such!

Think this was the right place to ask such questions. If not, sorry!

Oh and by the way, if you make a recommendation, and have played Enigma, could you give me a run down of the differences and what I should expect to be different?

Thanks fellas.

Dangerous Waters

That is if you're interested in a modern multi-platform simulation.

Silent Hunter III is probably a much more obvious and, shall we say, not overwhelming transition from Enigma.

Since it's World War II, the technology and tactics will be more rudimentary and easier to learn even at high realism levels. Compare your familiar Lock On with IL-2 - which one would you find easier to get into right away? I think IL-2 would clearly be the answer there...

And it's by far the best-looking naval sim on the market, period.

Dangerous Waters - I intend to give it a shot myself shortly, but expect a sharp learning curve and lots of technical information to internalize. If you're fine with that - multi-platform goodness that's great for multiplayer.

It's still tough for me to decide. Maybe I will get them both eventually. For now though, I can only afford one lol.

I think I see what you mean with the IL2 and Lock on comparison.

With Dangerous Waters you run highly advanced and complicated machines that can take lots of time to learn. With SHIII everything’s a little more... crude and basic? (No less fun of course!)

What do you guys think of the single player campaigns in the two?

Thanks again mates!

Well the campaigns are very different, and both leave a bit to be desired.

SHIII is 'dynamic', at least in the sense that no patrol you play will ever be the same. There is a lot of freedom of action in SHIII, and you can, theoretically, go and hunt traffic wherever you want - and it will be where you would expect to find it. It also has a crew management system, giving it a bit of a personalized touch. The campaign tracks your boat and career throughout the war, and the ability to upgrade your boat is also nice.

However, on the other hand - the campaign can feel a bit unrewarding and lonely, and the crew management system - somewhat frustrating. The sparseness of radio traffic, absence of AI boats, and various enemy AI deficiencies spoil the picture somewhat.
The community has done two things with this - mods like Real Uboat and SHIII commander help fix up some of the issues and give your captain a better sense of career; while others have taken to leagues like WaW to help build up a nicer, immersive environment.

***

I can't speak very much for DW, but as far as I understand - it has completely scripted campaigns that usually jump between platforms. It does not have a career mode like SHIII.

SHIII is, generally, better for single player campaigning - but not perfect. DW is probably at its best in multiplayer and in single missions.

Not to get off topic here but...

I was checking out WaW and it looked to be something I might be interested in. I certainly like the fact that WaW seems to try and make things as real as possible!

What are some things you do as a... squad? Whatever you call it hehe. When I get into sims I just go nuts about finding a squad or league or anything to join and enhance the atmosphere of these games.

I guess im just asking for a run down of what takes place in WaW. Do you guys hunt together in packs, or how does that work?

Thanks.

im a dangerous waters player i command the ship in my signature Akula class attack submarine (K157 tigr)

i have silent hunter 2 and 3 also sub command and enigma rising tide i find that dangerous waters takes it.

dangerous waters you can command air surface and sub surface platforms and if you want you can join a virtual navy that accomadates this title such as seawolves VMC or any other ones.

if your like me a big nuke fan and love russian boats then i suggest DW same with the american but if you like modern diesel subs then do go for DW also and modern air and surface.

if you like the old style U boats then Silent hunter 3 is your choice and is highly recomended.

failing all that buy both like i did

I thinking of getting DW for my winter holiday. Time to read the manuals, get my basic training Isnt there a career option in DW? Thats not good for immersion. Is DW realistic? What kinda mods does it have? :hmm:
