Default Thoughts on modern sub sim?

How about a modern sub sim with nuclear powered subs and present day technology? Maybe using the SHIII engine? Perhaps a modern attack sub or a boomer?

Would there be any interest? Is there anything like that in the pipeline?

I think the SH3 engine has the capabilities for a modern boomer because you have the entire world at your disposition, not like DW or SC where you only have a portion on each scenario.

Despite that, I don't think it would be good such kind of simulator, a whaste of a very good graphic engine because we would surface in rare ocasions.

But, what about another destroyer simulation?? :hmm:

I don't agree that it would be a waste! These kind of graphics are standard now. Also, you'd use the periscope and see it then.

I think there's a lot to be said for a new nuclear sim. But in order to be successful it would need to have some unique features. An absolute must for this would be introduction of a 1st person camera walkthrough system, and a fully modelled sub interior, and full AI crew that you can exchange places with if you wish. It would like SHIII, where only you can walk around. I think it would be fun also to have proper engine controls, nuclear systems are fun to operate.

A fully SH3-compatible destroyer sim would be nice to go with SH3.

What I would even prefer is an addon with international submarines : English, French, Italian or US (if pacific is developped) submarines, as well as other types of german ones (XXIII, UA, why not a midget sub or a milk-cow?).
A way that could be nice, and in the engine scope of SH3 is a WWI oriented simulator....

About a boomer sim, I feel that the water model is too poor for that : it is barely as much detailed for a WWII hydrophone station, but it would very probably be unsuitable for modern systems in terms of noise propagation, thermal layer... And the underwater model is all, in a modern sub-sim.

Another point is that helicopter has replaced the flying boats as the main air threat of the submarine, and no chopper is implemented in SH3, which means that it is probably not designed to accept them.

I'd leave the modern sim alone. 688I, Sub Command, and Dangerous Waters are much more detailed in the core game engine than SHIII will ever be.

I also don't think a Boomer sim would sell well. After all the whole premise is not to be found. You don't attack, you run away. Now a SSGN sim/add on might be cool. Especially if you coulg have an Ohio SSGN or ans Oscar II.

But, what I'd really like is a good Pacific WWII sim. I want I-Boats, where are my I-boats! Did I leave them in the car, or my closet? Where are they?

It's been mentioned, but I allow myself to point it out again: Dangerous Waters.
I don't think the SH3 engine, nor any drastically updated engine, could possibly cope with the extreme amounts of data that is needed to make this realistic.
I would have loved a merged SH/DW, because in DW you need to invest quite a bit of time and work to obtain good results, and you can only travel so far. Also, there is a lack of shipping that makes it very annoying to read that the game possesses "270 different ships/vehicles", while most of these 270 are just the same ships belonging to different nations. Also, Sonalysts can only invest so much time in updating DW, since it's hardcore, and not necessarily very fun for the standard gamer, which in turn means it doesn't sell like hell.
It's quite annoying that they've put in the old Type 206 diesel-electric German, when the 209 and 212 are FAR better adversaries, and the 212 virtually invisible. There aren't too many bugs, though. Just limitations. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!

Are we voting again?

If so, I still cast my vote for an updated Pacific Theatre WWII subsim.

I agree! I think it could be excellent if it were of the same quality as SH 3.

Yes. Just remember- "You can't put too much water in the reactor." :hmm:

I would like an attack sub sim. One could stalk soviet boomers using modern technology. Perhaps missions where one could stalk surface ships.

This probably wouldn't really tax the computer as far as graphics goes, as most everything happens submerged. I'd sure like a God's eye view, IMHO.

When SH2 came out also Destroyer command came out with. This has been mention many times before, but ya can't beat the SH2 & DC setup sub verses Destroyer (human players) online i preferred over a Lan. Makes all realism at the moment tendious

i don´t agree.

you can use the periscope views.., releasing a special forces or external views of the submarine.

Or playing with surface or air plataforms like a FFG or a antisubmarine helo.

Dangerous Waters, with the SHIII world, environment, and weather (not to mention, the quality of SHIII's 3D models) would be SO cool

that's a great idea Bill... defintely something i'd go for, and it would definitely kick @$$$...

but, i think that we are all overlooking a key apsect that both sims fail at presenting... and that takes away fromt he whole virtual experience...

the level of involvement in the operation of the submarine...

there are no valves to turn, no gauges to read, nothing that actually has anything to do with the seakeeping aspects of the ship... D to dive just doesn't do it for me...

and a map that give automatic update of your actual position really is a reality killer... add to that the sudden appearance of contacts, either by receivng at radio transmission from bdu or the autofire control tracking party...

i feel that if these two aspects were addressed in a Silent Hunter remake, we'd all be happy campers... errr, sub sailors... it really doesn't matter which era or theatre we are in... nuclear subs, wwii in the pacific, even wwi... if we ha more 'sub' stuff to do, it would make for a better sim/game overall...

oh yeah... add to that a touch of multiplayer with dds hunting subs, and it would be solid
