Now, before I start this, I just want to say that I don't know too much about U-boats, my entire subsim experience comes from Silent Service 2 on Nintendo, 688 on Sega Genesis and Sub Command.
That being said, what is up with 100% reliablity of most of your equipment (obviously excepting torpedoes here)? As long as you aren't getting warheads planted on your forehead, everything works, all the time. You dive planes never stick, radio and radar xmtrs never burn out, hatches always close before diving, guns don't jam, batteries never explode and there are never, ever fires in your boat that need to be fought. Maybe it could be an additional factor when taking a U-boat out earlier than it was historically introduced, ie. skipping the final shakedowns and debugging in order to deliver to you faster, or something to consider if your own command has taken one too many close depth chargings. I think having to worry about that 1% chance freak occurance would add another level of tension to SH3, as well as realism, along with giving IX drivers something to worry about during those long voyages across the Atlantic. As it stands right now, if you play smart, you will probably never have reason to use your flak guns, because the smart thing to do in case of an aircraft attack is to immediately dive. But what if you were ventalilating your boat during a minor fire in the disesel engine room? Dive and quickly watch your crew run out of air or stay on the surface and take a (big) chance dueling with aircraft. That being said, it shouldn't be something that happens frequently,at least not the catastrophic casualties, like main ballast tanks sticking open after surfacing or battery explosions, just enough that you have to be prepared for "it" to happen. |

Nah I don't really beleive in random events like that, but how about like in the AOD days when if you couldn't fix something it would stay destroyed until you got back to Port. I still remember travelling all the way to a designated patrol area only to have to sail all the way back due to my torp firing shaft/s being destroyed by a depth charge. This doesn't happen or not yet for me. Also remember how fun it was travelling back from USA at less than 3knts due to my diesels being smashed. But I find everything repairable on SH3.......
No I am not attacking SH3, I love SH3. ![]()

This actually doesn't need to be modded in as you can simulate it yourself. If you decide you need some sort of malfunction on your boat, find the nearest destroyer and sneak up near it silently. Once in position crank your speed up to flank. Now just wait for the destroyer to detect, locate, and depth charge you. Once that first DC hits, there's your malfunction so get that repair crew working!
If you want to keep it random just pick a number and then roll some dice every 10 hours or so of game time. If you roll the number you picked, it's time to start looking for that destroyer. I suggest Scapa Flow as a good location. The nice thing too is that the destroyer will randomly choose a malfunction for you, so you don't have to roll any more dice. |

id love random stuff like that.. Adds to realism and this happened all the time to uboats. But as for SH3 having stuff destroyed until port, it happens, Ive had my periscopes destroyed which made it useless to attack ships. But for batteries being destroyed and other stuff going wrong on the boat after the a DC.. havent expericned it. I hope that would happen, because thats just plum unrealistic if it doesnt. Once i get to red on my boat on dont really last very long so i dont get a chance to check.

Some "random" events would be fun. A diesel breaking down during a patrol from over-exertion would be nice. If only my car had the same reliability, I would be rich by now

I have had one instance of damage that forced me to a friendly port. So, yes it does happen.
However, the standard damage repair times are too short, sometimes damage control is at work in a compartment for a total of 5 minutes real time. I then wonder, did that really qualify as damage? The point about random breakdowns is well taken, BUT... Was it in SHII that you could fairly predict your sub's engine breakdowns on a regularly scheduled basis. AS long as something is well programmed, I am Ok with it.
