if you want to determine the name of your boat before you start your career, edit the C:\Ubisoft\Stock\Data\Roster\American\Submarine\su bname.CFG using Notepad. Just eliminate all names below the first and change the first name to whatever you want.

if you are doing this after you have started your career, you need to edit two files using Notepad.
you have to do this change while in port between missions.
use Windows Explorer and find your Savefiles. should be something like this:
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAMEHERE\Documents\SH4\data\cfg\S aveGames
find the most recently saved folder and drill down into it.
find the files named ActiveUserPlayerUnits.upc and CareerTrack.upc.
make a copy of both. you can keep the copies in the same folders.
in CareerTrack.upc, change the lines with the current boatname to whatever you want. Example: NameDisplayable=U-502
Change U-502 entries to USS Kamoniwannalayya.

in ActiveUserPlayerUnits.upc, change just the one line: UnitName=U-502.
