Default Identifying Targets

Evening All

question how does the game recognize the identity of targets

For example here are some sinking off one of my patrols you notice how some ships have the name and full inventory and some just give the basic info is it to do with getting close to the ship before sinking it or something like that ?

Anybody know how the game determines it ?
