Russian MoD made a great present to all those interested in navy on the eve of Russian Navy Day which we celebrate this Sunday. Bespokoiniy - a 956 project destroyer (built in 1990) became a museum ship and is now stationed in Kronstadt. There was a solemn ceremony of opening this morning which ended with a ship's gun shot. From now on Bespokoiniy would fire a single shot every day at 12 o'clock (there was a request from Navy veterans for that).
So everyone interested are welcome at Kronstadt :-)

Happy Russian Navy day. As jimBuna had already said, a fine looking ship. The Sovremennyy-class anti-surface warship or project 956 destroyer certainly had graceful lines. The Udaloy anti-submarine destroyers also had beautiful, uncluttered lines. Both class of ships are a credit to their designers with incredible top speeds of 32.7 Kn / 37.6 mph for the Sovremennyy and 35 kn / 40mph for the Udaloy.

If the Sovremennyy class ships had an Achilles Heel, it would be in their steam turbine engines. Several ships of this class suffered from problems regarding their propulsion system that were so severe that they had to be retired. Nice thread and post Dmitry Markov. I would be interested, if you know, how Russia feels about these vessels with regards to performance and effectiveness in achieving their overall, respective missions

What Wiki dosen't tell - is that Udaloy and Sovremenny were meant to operate in pairs (heard that in some Russian documentary film). Udaloy was responsible for anti-sub component and Sovremenny provided escort and together two ships had double anti-ship and anti-air capabilities. Another interesting thing is that both classes have sea-to-land capabilities limited to artillery systems and specialized more in dealing with sea and air threats. But that was common with all Soviet designs.
