No sure if this is the right place to post this or if it's been posted before.
Does anybody have any good sources or general info on Soviet (invasion, landing) fleet compositions, formations, general anti aircraft / missile tactics. |

If you can find a copy, Norman Polmar prepared multiple editions of his "Guide to the Soviet Navy" for the Naval Institute Press. I have the 5th Edition (1991). The books have a very complete order of battle for ships and airplanes of the Soviet Navy with decent information on strategy, basing, organization, etc.
You can get copies on Amazon from 3rd party sellers for $50-$30 US. The 4th Edition from 1986 is even cheaper. |

I got the 1978 and 81 editions for research during the development of Cold Waters. The 81 edition has an entire section on the merchant marine that the earlier one lacks.

For example: All Akula's (in service since: 1984) have SS-N-27 Sizzler missiles (in service since: 2012) another one: All F-15 (in service since: 1976) have AIM-120 AMRAAM (in service since: 1991) Next problem is lacking of many older versions of units for russian fleet. Example: For Russia you can find only newest verssions of Tarantul class (only III with SS-N-22 Sunburn or V with SS-N-25 Switchblade) Tarantul I is availabe from polish navy batabase (version with SS-N-2D Styx) ... but many minor warships doesn't exists in database. All above makes creating "vintage" scenarios is incredibly difficult. |

I agree that Stock DW is very limited. The RA mod adds in a ton of older platforms (both Soviet and NATO), although you still have the loadout issues at times. Because you can't specify the loadout of AI units, a mod would almost have to include multiple versions of some platforms, each with a different loadout. That would probably be a lot of work. Too bad the mission editor for DW is fairly limited.

Thanks for the replies, I'm messing around in RA trying to make missions but also (mostly) DCS because the Viggen should be released sometime this year.
I thought there isn't a better place to ask than in the forum of a Naval Sim set during the Cold war. Probably should have posted this in the general forum of subsim (upps). |
