Icon13 Having too many programs open at once caused crash

HELP

I was working on the mod "SH4 Effects for SH3" with S3D. SH3 was open, and also JSGME. And my computer crashed suddenly ! (blue screen, I have a lot of them since a few months). After re-opening windows XP, all my mods have been disabled in JSGME ! Moreover, the files particles.dat and materials.dat in data/Library are corrupted : I have no more particles in game ! And last problem, even if my mods are disabled in JSGME, they are still applied in game ! Should I re-install (for the fourth time) SH3 now ??

I just hope that my mods are NOT corrupted too !

Please help !

F.

PS : I've made this test : re-enable a mod, then disable it, but it is still applied in game ...

Reinstall from scratch I say. It's a silly thing to do having JSGME, the game and a file editor open at the same time working on the same files. If those files of the game are opened by those programs and things crash you cannot be sure what happens to the files. Changes may or may not be applied to disk. Consider them corrupt.

Make sure you are modding on a seperate installation of the game, that is not using your playing SH3 installation and savegames. And keep regular backups. Especially if you get BSODs regularly. Fix the cause first. Or your system might be completely upside down the next time, permanently.

Yes probably, but I can't work in another way, because I always have to check in game what's the result of my modifications. If I should close S3D each time, I would have to close and re-open it perhaps 100 times per day !

Thanks for your advises.

You could try running a copy of Windows in a VirtualBox (that way you can also roll it back)

Download VirtualBox (it's free) either from virtualbox.org or Oracle. It lets you run an entire operating system as a program within your system.

Get a legal Windows disc and 'install' to a new virtualbox machine.

You can now run that Windows Virtualbox machine as a program, and install SH3 and your mods within it, without affecting your normal machine in any way. Also, if you break anything in the VirtualBox machine, you can revert to a snapshot of the system as it was before you broke it. That is, you can 'snapshot' the machine, run and test what you want, then close the machine and revert to your saved snapshot.

Very handy for development: I use it for a 'clean' testing environment in an installation that has not got my development tools in it - to simulate an end-user's machine properly.

I can understand running average-run-of-the-mill programs in a virtual machine is helpfull for testing. But expecting a game to run normally inside a virtual machine is expecting a lot. Performance is the first to go out of the window. Especially if the CPU does not have proper virtualization support.

Sound advice and I'll add one more snippet of equal importance.....after uninstalling clean out the registry files to ensure nothing residual has been left behind in your system which could corrupt the new installation on first loading.

CCleaner is free and RegVac is licensed but a free trial version can be had at the link below.

Then, your huge trouble is your computer and windows, not JSGME.

This is what I do - close and reopen S3D, JSGME and the game 100 times per day. And already third year I don't have such problems.

I had blue screens several times with my method. But this is the first time that I have a problem with JSGME. Yes, with JSGME : all the mods have been disabled but are still applied in the files. Thus, all my SH3 installation is now corrupted.

Anyway, I have no more enough space on my hard disk for installing anything.

Hem,

before uninstalling SH3 with Steam :

I have 2 installations of SH3 in the same steam folder :
- one called "Silent Hunter 3"
- and the other called "Silent Hunter 3 - GWX - GWM"

Isn't Steam going to uninstall both ???

EFBob, I do have Virtual Box downloaded but not installed. Too many programs running in the background shouldn't affect JSGME. Bad downloads will affect the mod install to the sim. For background program running, Game Booster should solve that problem. I always did and still does for me. Look in this thread....
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=223687

I've run SH3 off a slave drive with no problems. It was actually my old XP C Drive with SH3 and SH5 on it. As a slave it didn't boot up but showed up as my F Drive.

I'm thinking of going dual boot so I can choose which drive to run. I still see people running XP connected to the internet. But, I'm only going to run XP off line. SH3 and 5 might still be on that XP drive.

Right this minute I'm running a couple of programs off a different slave drive with no problems.

For those able to run a slave drive loaded with XP, wouldn't this solve a whole bunch of problems for running SH3?
