Need some help with my Win 8.1 install

Okay, I received my "Revival" (2010) UK install disk today for SE3. As far as I can tell from the readme EMEA EN.txt file, this is patched to 1.4 (not sure if it means 1.4b or not) and doesn't seem to contain Starforce. It doesn't require the CD to be in the drive.

I haven't installed anything apart from the game itelf (no Codec files). When I run it from my Win 8.1 laptop, it starts up okay. If I go to "View Tutorial", it opens the video outside the game in Windows Media player (is this normal?).

When I start the tutorial, it sort of starts, but things freeze after a short while.

If I try to run the sh3.exe under Win XP compatibility settings, but it doesn't seem to help much, the game still locks up quickly.

I've installed the game into c:\Games\SilenthunterIII

I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit. I have no mods installed.

The laptop has a 2.6Ghz i7 Quad Core CPU, an Nvidia 970M GPU with 3Gb VRAM, 16Gb RAM, and a 1Tb SSD

All the latest drivers are installed on the computer.

Does anyone have any ideas where I might be going wrong? I've worked in IT for more than 10 years, so consider myself reasonably techie!

Hi again!

The version you have is OK, so never mind.

The game's path is OK, so never mind.

The videos should not be played in an external player outside the game , but in it... by default by the game...

Did you set compatibility mode and checked the box "Run as Admin" ?

An idea is to install DX 9, it does not harm your rig...

We WILL get you sorted...

EDIT: These videos are rather oldschool, regarding codecs, that might be the answer... Try a codec - pack!

Question: Does any video play ingame, when you start the game? I.e.: Inside the game, no external player?

Thanks for your help Danasan. Okay, some success now - for some reason the game as now started working (after a reboot I think)when run in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode. I didn't have to set Run as Adminstrator, but have now done so anyway.

Remaining problems:

1) Whenever I run the game windows pops up alert about "Allow Program from an unknown publisher run on this computer" - how do I stop it asking thus?

2) It takes a very long time to start (black screen), but once the Silent Hunter III logo appears, then start quite quickly. The program is installed on a SATA3 SSD drive, so I'm surprised how long it takes to start

3) When I select "View Tutorial" the videos play outside of the game in Windows Media player. I tried installing Direct X 9c, but this doesn't change anything. I don't know if other game videos do this, as haven't got this far - how can I check. Have any other Windows 8.1 users been able to get the videos to play in game.

On the plus side, from what I can tell the 3D graphics run very smoothly, without any tearing or artefacts (as they should with a 970M GPU!)

One other thing, when exiting SH3 it often stops my virus checker (BitDefender) from running!

Steve asked the same thing and I posted a link to a good program.

SH3 will minimize and play in Media player or any program you have assigned as the default viewer.
It was 2005 and according to my grandkids? We had just invented the wheel like 100 years earlier.

So this is normal, does this happen to everyone running SH3 under Win 8.1?
