Noob questions

i have played sh3 a little and come to rely on the WO's reports.
In sh4 where are the WO's reports. The only contact reports i can get when surfaced are from the SO using his hydrophone. I though the hydrophone didnt work surfaced.

sh3 has that nice large compass with bearing vs heading on it. is there a mod for sh4 which provides this?

I patched sh4 1.3 with 1.4 and installed TMO. From what i gather TMO deals mostly with IA behavior and quality and quantity of enemy units and parameter changes on the sub and not so much with altering maps, dials, gauges, tools etc. is this correct? I guess what im asking is what can i look for to make sure TMO is installed?
