For anyone who's interested I made this mod for my own amusement and thought I'd share. It's also going to be included in the next version of RFB.
http://www.beerymod.com/SH4/USNSS.7z US Naval Submarine School mod (realism mod for single player SH4): This mod adds a more realistic submarine school feeling to the game's tutorial missions. It is based on the US Naval Submarine School based in Groton, Connecticut. Please note that this mod is in no way supported or endorsed by Ubisoft. It is an unofficial patch intended purely to enhance everyone's enjoyment of the game. IMPORTANT NOTES: This mod is to be used with Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific version 1.2. It may not work properly if you don't have the correct game version installed. ---------------------------- Version 1.00 070518: Added all new Submarine School missions. Mod by Beery (Data\SubmarineSchool\SS01 Navigation\SS01 Navigation.mis, SS01 Navigation.tga, SS01 Navigation.tsr; Data\SubmarineSchool\SS02 Artillery\SS02 Artillery.mis, SS02 Artillery.tsr; Data\SubmarineSchool\SS03 Torpedo Attack\SS03 Torpedo Attack.mis, SS03 Torpedo Attack.tsr; Data\SubmarineSchool\SS04 Convoy Attack\SS04 Convoy Attack.mis, SS04 Convoy Attack.tsr).

I love this, so much better than the default school.
One problem though, on the torpedo training mission... it almost always fails me before my torpedoes ever hit the cruiser. I edited the mission by hand to remove some fail triggers, will see if that helps. In any case, this should be the school everyone uses instead of the 'default' school! |

Glad you like the mod. I thought something with a bit more of a challenge was needed for the navigation training, so that's where the idea got started for the mod. And to Captain Cox, yes, this is the same mod that's in RFB.

Hmm, not sure this is a bug... In fact, after looking around, I'm pretty sure this isn't a bug. The last training mission is simply a bigger version of the artillery training? For a moment I thought it was bugged, but I suspect you just took out the convoy hunting aspect and redesigned it. I suppose it's not realistic to be sent hunting a convoy on a 'training' mission

Later I plan to build a final 'cruise' patrol where the player navigates to Bermuda and back, with exercises along the way, just as real sub skippers did.

I haven't had time to play with this yet beery, but I have a suggestion. Ship the sub school with 2 mods. One is the school missions (same as now). The 2d mod would be a copy of the hardcore torpedo mod...
But the dud rate would be upped to 100%. ![]() You could shoot at friendly target ships then, and you'd know you had a hit when you got the dud messege. I guess if you were really into it, you could change the "it's a dud, sir" to "Target ship reports torpedo would have hit, sir." heheh tater |

I just received a bunch of info from Wendy S. Gulley, the archivist at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, CT about submarine training in WW2. She also told me of a book "He's in Submarines Now," by Henry Felsen which I'll try to lay my hands on. Here's all the stuff I've got so far that's relevant to the mod.
GENERAL INFORMATION – Page 202So mostly this is academic stuff, but there's a lot I can milk from it to give more authenticity to the training missions, especially in terms of the commanding officer's name and the stuff about the watch (an idea that comes to mind: the last training mission can be timed and if the mission is done fast enough the watch can be awarded). The main type of submarine, the O class, is interesting as it's not modelled in SH4, but I'll see if it's possible to work that in somehow. There are also some hints about types of training, but I'll have to get the book she recommends in order to get that stuff perfect. Anyway, I thought I'd post this stuff. I find it interesting so maybe others will too.

O-class subs seem to closely resemble the S-class subs. Here are some examples to show how similar these subs are to the S-class boats:

You can find the basics of it in RFB (Real Fleet Boat). This mod was started by Beery. It is stuck at the top of this forum.
