Long overdue IMHO...go to many countries abroad and the first thing you are asked for is your insurance cover note.

I foresee the number of emergency admissions rising to astronomical levels.

Migrants and overseas visitors are to face new charges for some NHS services in England, ministers say.

They include extended prescription fees, the introduction of charges for some emergency care and higher rates for optical and dental services.

However, GP and nurse consultations will remain free, and nobody will be turned away in an emergency.

Charge them the full cost, no exceptions. No treatment without payment or insurance.
Contrary to popular belief, the NHS is NOT free - we pay for it through our taxes. I don't mind paying my share but I don't want to pay for people who are only here for the 'free' healthcare.
I have insurance when I travel abroad for exactly this reason. They should do the same.

No insurance, no entry into the UK, if the customs officers did their job properly there wouldn't be any need for this.

The British Medical Association said it was concerned the proposals would require doctors and GPs to spend more time on paperwork and that it could cost more in administration charges than what it would recuperate.

Easy solution for administering this approach.
All you brits must at all times carry papers which must be surrendered for examination on demand to anyone at all who might want/need to look at them.

But then again, didn't your tories just reject two studies into this subject they commisioned themselves, because the data the studies produced showed the scare stories the party peddle to be complete bollox?

I'm not saying this position is unique to the UK but I have personal experience of having lived in Holland where health insurance was an absolute priority for expats.

The anti lobby is already spouting off things like..great women have to give birth in the streets now! Sorry about the heart attack tough luck..ect ect ect.

No doubt they will take it up with the EU and well lets see what will happen.

It has already been stipulated that no emergency cases will be turned away...it is those with pre-existing conditions plus dental and optical requirements who will need to pay.

Much like so many other countries.

Obviously in these times of austerity and with an election looming not too far off these are the issues politicians are going to have to address.
