Default BT wins £897m Champions League deal

As much as I'm pleased that Sky doesn't rule everything in football anymore, I'm wondering if the success of BT might have some impact on the price of a tv licence?

Quote:
BT Sport has announced an exclusive £897m three-year deal to broadcast live Champions League and Europa League football matches.
The broadcaster has won the rights to show all 350 fixtures each season from 2015 after talks with European governing body Uefa.
A BT spokesman said it had "shaken up the UK TV market" and would make some matches, including finals, free to air.
The news is a major blow to Sky and ITV, which currently share the rights.

Jim? Should that football deal and Royal Marine story be in different threads?

Could be the Royal Marines were football fans...

Anyway, on the first I'd say that it was more likely that your BT bills (if you have any) will go up, because BT have staked a LOT of money on this, and they're going to need a good return from it.
For the average football fan, it's more incentive to listen to Radio Five, it's not just the game that's become a money sinkhole, it's even just watching the game. We'll see how much of a return BT makes from it.

As for the second story. Well...sadly it's not that surprising, despite the rigourous training methods that the RM are put through, the combat zone is going to take its toll on them, be it through mental fatigue or just sheer incompatibility between ROE and a persons behaviour.
Not the first, and likely not the last, but at least he's been put down for it.

This just shows how the future of broadcast TV is in sports.

With anything else, you can just record it, wait for it to show up on netflix, or just pirate it. Only with sports is it impossible for you to skip the ads.

Did you know that if you had a time machine, go back to 1999, instead of investing your life savings in the tech industry, you would make a lot more money if you invested in a pro sports team.

Also, do you guys have something like MLB.tv for the premier league?

I love it, it sure beats traditional TV broadcasts.

I think that's the sort of thing that BT is looking to do, but it's a case of gearing it through our fairly elderly infrastructure, broadband availability is...well, it's getting better, and there's a lot of campaigning to get it out into more rural areas, and we're fully digital now in terms of television broadcasting, so it's working its way there. Just, like with a lot of British things, we've got a lot of old stuff around and it takes time to replace it with new stuff, roads, railways, tower blocks, politicians...
