Default DD Akizuki's 3.9in main guns not shooting at planes.

I noticed (almost by accident) that the DD Akizuki's 3.9 inch Double main guns do not fire at aircraft. Asashio, Fubuki, Kagero, etc that have 5 inch Double main guns, are all blasting away at the aircraft with their 5 inch Doubles. Do 3.9 inch Double guns not have AA capability? ...or is it some kinda glitch? I was playing the BATTLE OF MIDWAY in the SINGLE MISSIONS and the Japanese Task Force came under air attack before I got within torpedo range, when I noticed this.

Yes, the 3.9 inch guns on the Akizukis were probably the best AA guns mounted on any IJN ship in the war, They should be firing on planes.

But then it's also notable that there were no Akizukis present at the Battle of Midway either. The first of the class being commissioned at Maizuru later that same month. I guess it's possible that it's substituting for another class given the developers shorted the Japanese a few destroyers.

I'll put some DD AKIZUKI's in later scenarios and see what happens...

Let us know if you see those turrets pointing upward at some point. It would be odd that a ship designed with such a superb anti-aircraft battery wasn't using it.

Ok, here's what I did so far... I went to the BATTLE OF THE PHILLIPINE SEA scenario in the SINGLE MISSIONS, there are AKIZUKI's listed in it. I put a camera on a AKUZUKI and waited for the air attack to start. Again, the 25mm AA guns were blazing away at the planes, but the 3.9 main batteries did nothing. An ASASHIO destroyer passed by close and I could see it's 5in batteries blasting away at the planes. I went to the LIBRARY section using S3D and opened the GUNS_RADARS.SIM section, then looked for the 3.9in_Double_base_Jp (it took a while) Went to 26: wpn_Cannon, clicked it, 27:wpn_Cannon dropped down, clicked it. To the right a box appears. Clicked on obj_Turret. That displayed the 3.9in Cannon properties. Went down to ammo storage and noticed no AA shells were assigned to it. I changed it to have 500. Saved the changes, then went back to the PHILLIPINE SEA scenario. The 3.9's still did not shoot at planes. Went back to S3D and changed the 3.9 from CANNON to AA GUN. Still, no shooting at planes. I even put 5in's on an AKIZUKI and put 3.9's on an ASASHIO. The 5in's were shooting at the planes and the 3.9's still did nothing. So, I think there is a glitch in the 3.9in_Double_base_Jp guns somewhere. I could probably look deeper into their properties later, but this is what I did so far and no dice. If anyone else has any ideas that might work, please post them. In the meantime, I left the 5in_Double_base_Jp batteries on the AKIZUKI. She looks funny, but at least until we find out why the 3.9's are not shooting at planes, she will engage planes with her main guns.

I think the reason the 3.9 inch guns are not shooting at planes is that in the game, guns are either AA or main armament. That is, the AA will shoot at aircraft, and the main arm. at surface targets. There is no such thing as "dual purpose". Same with our subs; the crew will not fire the 3in./4in./5in. at aircraft because they are deck guns, not AA.

I doubt that the Devs had too much time to devote to surface battles.

I swithched the 3.9in_Double_base_Jp from CANNON to AA in S3D. It still would NOT fire at planes. The 5in_Double_base_Jp is also listed as a CANNON and it shoots at planes. When I put 5in's on the Akizuki in place of the 3.9's, they fired at planes. I placed the 3.9's on an Asashio and still no shooting at planes. I'm still playing with the various numbers in S3D, hopefully something will work...

UPDATE: Got it!!! There is another guns_radar.sim in the ShipParts folder also. Follow my steps above and when you see AMMO STORAGE, click on it. Under AA, it's 0. change it to whatever number you want (I put 500), save the changes and the 3.9's now shoot at planes. There is a GUNS_RADAR in the LIBRARY folder and a GUNS_RADAR listed in the SHIPPARTS folder also. It appears the one in the ShipParts folder is the ones you want to change, if not, then you'll have to change them both.
