USS Cod will fire up her diesels and her deck gun for labor day.

In my hometown of Cleveland Ohio, we have maybe the only working, (95% seaworthy) Gato class submarine as a museum ship, moored in the Northcoast Harbor, she received an oil change and had some major overhaul work done to get ready for labor day. My fiancé and I took an unguided tour on Independence Day, and we highly recommend a visit to anyone interested and close enough to Cleveland to make the trip. She'll be firing up her engines and firing her 5 inch deck gun hourly. I'll be there for sure, hope some of you can make it to see this old war hero in action.

That's amazing.I do wish she could go out for a shallow dive.I would pay good money for that!

You might be interested in the USS Pampanito, a functioning Balao Class fleet sub moored as part of the San Francisco Maritime National Park. She was used in the filming of "Down Periscope":

I've never been to see the Cod and I cant tell from the picture provided in the article. I assume it could get underway and make way under her own power. How do visitors get down below, is there a non-tight access cut thru the deck, or is she still water tight?

Only one of the subs to not have cuts in her pressure hull for visitors.Visitors must climb down the hatches are crews did.Water tight? Sounds like should be but there are other openings such as vents, induction etc that affect this so not sure.Would be great if she is, I look forward to visiting one day.

I can assure that the USS Cod is not water tight in respects that you could dive the the thing.Sure it is on display moored and it may be well kept but that hardly makes it sea worthy.I doubt that the propulsion system is fully connected either.

Dang, I live in Cleveland but I won't be able to go see this on Labor Day.

Besides the costs of getting A WWII era sub to full running condition would easily cost a few million dollars not to mention the cost of having people able to actually properly operate the thing.Nor to consider the risk this places on the irreplaceable vessel either being damaged at sea or worse sinking.

No I think having a sub in good shape with some bits that still can operate to some extent to give people a little history lesson is more than enough to ask of an old war horse.

I am likely a bit off on my operating costs as well an A-1 Skyraider such as the one in my sig I recon costs about one or two million to get up to flying condition and then if you add the yearly operating costs.

I suppose she's far from dive-worthy, although if I remember correctly it did still have a watertight hatch at the entrance and exit. You have to climb down the ladder to get in and back up another to get out.
