In years gone by I've owned Aces of the Deep (Great game!) and I believe it was the original Silent Hunter (US sub in the Pacfic). I just bought Silent Hunter 3 from Steam for $9.99. Probably would have been better off buying a disk, but I could download and play right away with Steam.
My question is this. I hit times where the time compression will not go higher than 4. Typically I crash dive after air attack, get to 50 meters, warning sub silhouette will be green, no sounds or explosions, but can't compress above 4. Seems that sometimes if I change depth, i can increase compression, but not always. If I'm in a combat situation with a destroyer I can still compress up to 16 or 32. What gives?? ![]() |

When you can not overcome a TC of 4, submerged at 50m, is because you are near the bottom. Try this click the navigator and using the Atlas Echolot, the navigator will report the depth under keel. If this is small you can not increase the TC at least you upload a little (something similar happens when navigating near land).
Best regards. ![]()

Yup, must be land-proximity limited. To adjust, edit the landproximity line under [Timecompression] in the file: \SH3gamefolder\Data\Cfg\main.cfg.
Or better yet, get SH3 Commander to adjust it and get loads more options as a bonus. |

OK, Thanks! I didn't consider that I might be near the bottom. Just asumed the water was deeper. Thanks again!

Yes, although current versions of the DVD, which contain SH3 v1.4, do not have the dreaded security files (aka Starforce) either. I don't know when Ubi removed Starforce, but the current version doesn't have it. But sometimes it is hard to know what version you are buying, especially when ordering on-line.

Thanks, BigWalleye!
Another question. While playing a bit this am before heading out to work I had a few odd reports. I was crusing on surface, west of Scapa Flow, daylight, clear weather, time compression 512, warning silhouette green. All has been quiet, skies and ocean clear. Suddenly I get the report "we've been spotted", silhouette blinks red for a second and back to green. No reports of ship or plane spotted, no attacks on my sub, nothing else. First couple times I dropped to real time and searched sky and ocean, nothing. Other times (maybe 4 or 5 total) I ignored it and sailed on with nothing happening. ![]() Also, in my game, on the map, reported contacts are in color. Blue seems to be friendly ships, Green I think is neutral and red are hostile. Is this normal due to my realism settings? I've noticed others on here asking about identifying target ships. AFAIK, stock game contact colors show IFF. Some mods change this - GWX and NYGM do. Don't know if realism settings can change it. I've never played stock.
![]() I don't use the stealthmeter, so I've never seen what you describe. I'd guess that someone is catching a glimpse of you through the mist, then losing the contact as they move out of range. At TC512, you don't ever notice them. If enemy locks on and starts to approach you, hopefully your lookouts will spot him, report, and drop you back to TC1 in time to react. You can set maximum TC for various circumstances at Data/Cfg/Main.cfg or with SH3 Commander. I strongly recommend using SH3 Commander, even with stock SH3. It's not a mod, but a front-end program which launches SH3. It has a lot of nice features which add to game immersion. |
