Default Should you upgrade your Hydrophone?

Im just starting a new game, I was wondering if you should upgrade the hydrophone after completing the tutorial mission?

I played a game all day yesterday on realism settings. Heres the problems I ran into. I never got reports of convoys or merchant ships. I would get reports of destroyers if they were in visual range.

I only sunk one merchant ship, and it was in port. I was working on the 50,000 tons off the british coast. I did upgrade my hydrophone prior to going out on patrol after completing the tutorial, and was wondering if this was the root of my problems.

Also I misspent all my promotion points on the cook, and then had none left over for the hydrophone guy to help me actually find ships and convoys.

Not sure BdU will be impressed, but if we have to sail around and not find anything, at least we can eat well!

I think it has something to do with it being on realistic that ships don't show up at all. Although I downloaded the patch and installed it through JSGME, I hope I did it correctly like all my other mods.

But I started a campaign on Medium difficulty and every ship in vicinity was visible, but when I went back to realism, I pretty much can't figure out how to find ships on this setting.

Ok new question, how do I find ships if I have realism settings on full? Seems impossible at this point, I might have to take it down a notch to hard, what do you guys play at?

Also I still haven't figured out how to use the Manual TDC, I usually just look for the bright green or yellow arrow and fire where I think the ship will be by the time the torpedo gets there.

this should help you
Make sure you have TDW's .exe hydrophone fix patch though. It does help a lot.
