Gotta Question regarding Upgrades

Okay,
I just got back to base, it's late Jan, 1940. I know there are some broken aspects to the upgrades, all of them I guess. So I've been tossing around the idea of adding in a mod to fix some of the upgrade issues.

I guess my question is; are the upgrade issues bad enough to warrant installing a mod for it? If I do not install a mod to fix this, will I get upgrades??
I see a lot of people I respect a lot that don't use an upgrade fix so, is it really needed?
