Somwhere i found a thread, explaining the real navigation without using the automatic contact entries on the map.
I would like to try to use the speed+clock=> distance method to plot my course. Also i would like to use the sextant. Can someone give me a link to a tutorial for the sextant in Magnum Opus? (dont know if its MO or OH2 which is containing the sextant). Also i saw someone using some pimped plotting tools from TDW, which contained a really detailed compass rose for plotting a precise course. Cant find anything in the mod section. ![]() Please help ![]() |

I have done it in FSX, with the Bubble Sextant Gauge.
Using a Sextant itself and plotting the results is not so hard. What is needed is some form of almanac to predict where the stars should be at a particular time, and some kind of visual chart to explain the night sky you can see, so you can get your bearings. If you have an iPhone or similar, two very good apps I recommend for this job is the iNA, (US nautical almanack) and a program called "Stellarium".

Hi I am 2nd mate on merchant ships (mostly bulkers and containers) and to be honest sextant is only necessary during PSC inspection when you have to prove to some idiot you know how to use it

You have a point, but how can you call yourself a true mariner if you can't haul out the ol' sky wrench and do a sight reduction? What happens if your GPS goes TU or the Yanks turn off the satellites?

Well, its only a game...uh, well I thought so until I started seeing constellations in my night sky whilst on patrol. Noticed it in fact in Silent Hunter 4 first of all, but much more prominent now in SH5. Real Nav will have to wait until I finish my first stock campaign and really get a wider monitor (currently 17") to really get the feel of the game. Adds a dimension to the game that really ups the bar of just pointing and shooting, no? Manual TDC is hard enough, but without the nav map updates and leaving it to the navigator, then...
