Default Russian demands slow down 4G border networks

A 100 kilometre buffer zone demanded by Russia has thrown providers of 4G network phone services into confusion. The government had already announced a co-ordination dispute with Russia over the issue of phone frequencies had been solved. However, service providers have now received a demand for a buffer zone that will restrict 4G services near the border.

What gives with these guys?

Is it some kind of "will to exert power" just because they can. Or some kind of fear of social media in border regions.

We all know social media helped foster Egypt, Syria, Libya and the OWS movement. It also spread the post election violence in Iran.

(IMHO, I believe it is the latter)

It does sound pretty extreme, but there is also such a thing as, you know, signal interference. If it affects the service on Russian territory, that's a reasonable request.

However, hopefully this means that Russia will give something in return. Agreements like this do not normally happen for free, so I think there's gotta be some other side to the story here.

Unless of course the Russian "offer" is "give us the buffer zone or we'll turn the Woodpecker back on!"
