A fairly correct statement, and it is not possible to exclude a particular country's presence in this final stage, many have been assassinated for less.

Maybe its secret because the truth is too embarassing for his captors to admit, maybe they were leading him away when he tripped and fell down the stairs or had a heart attack. (so they shot him to make it look like it wasn't an accident)
