Spacing for convoys or military flotillas

I'm building a mission and it's going to have a convoy and a military flotilla coming through the mission space. What is the usual distance between each ship usually (I'm going to try to keep the ships from freaking out and crashing into each other when all the hell breaks loose) ? I figured someone here would have to know.
