Default For Those Who Like Classical Music & Bad Puns

Here in Los Angeles the big news is the closing, for the coming weekend, of a 10 mile stretch of the 405 freeway to all traffic. Since this section is the main (some would say the only usuable) route between the two major population centes on the west side of the city, the effect are going to be felt over a large area. The local media has dubbed this "Carmageddon" and has been harping on this moniker incessantly for a month now. A local classical music station DJ expressed his weariness over hearing the same name over and over and challenged his listeners to come up with something new. It all started with "Autodammerung - Twilight of the Rods" and has been growing since. Here are the links:

Only loosely related, and I don't have anything original to offer, but many years ago Reader's Digest had a good one from a New York punster:

The George Washington Bridge at rush hour: The Car-Strangled Spanner.

Yeah, from what I'm seeing, the hype made for kind of an anticlimax.

Miracles of miracles, the car mad residents of Los Angeles actually listened and stayed home. Businesses did take a hit, though. I was in Beverly Hills over the weekend and quite a few of the businesses had signs on their door saying they were closing for the weekend. Restaurants that are usually packed were mostly empty. Driving around the L.A. area was a breeze due to the many MIA drivers. Some people are even saying the closing of the 405 freeway should be a regular event. I say anything that seals off the residents of the San Fernando Valley from the rest of us is good...
